 I got a prototype of the "original" up and working. Since then I have been 
working on a "modern" surface mount reproduction which has a few minor 
improvements over the original design, eg, lithium battery, leds to indicate 
protection on etc. I've uploaded some pics showing the status of the design 
to the photos section
