I agree, for me the SDSIII isn't "really" a Simmons ... but it had been the base ! it's a pure analog synth more than a drum synth... So yes it's difficult to compare SDSV & III as the use will be necessary different ! But what devastating balls in it !!! I compare often the SDSIII to an ARP synth, because of the look , the sound, & also because Dave was repairing ARPs when he made the SDSIII ... so I presume the inspiration & influence was strong... I should check that ! I personnaly discovered the SDSIII & SDSIV very late... about 3 years ago I guess, I didn't even suspected that it existed before , while in the same time I've been looking for Simmons for ten years so I think that there was not many people who knew it existed. & about the 808 or 909 (& we could had the Fairlight Page R, or even the MPC AKAI)... a friend of mine who had his glory hours using all this stuff, did insist a lot about the sequencer being very important to the global sound of these units . it makes them sound in a way that you lose even if using the same unit trigged by another sequencer...
