The battery is a rechargable 3.6V nickel-cadmium cell.

Replace it with a battery of this type :

  Ok, so I've plugged in that SDS7 I had since 1986, and it powers on etc but no sound comes 
  out. I pulled all the modules and the card with the battery and it looks like this:

  Looks like some corrosion on the battery. So- Simmons made the battery permanent?
  What is it?
