On mine it was a 4.8v lithium (or thereabouts).  I used 3 AA batteries 
soldered together and taped onto the inside of the case, in 
time-honoured fashion.  You'll find a similar arrangement inside my 
ESQ-1, JX-8P, Polysix, various Suns and Mac G3 (and probably others).
