Say hey, fellow synth captains

Here's a rendering of the new beast to warm the cockles
of your sonic hearts -- The "KRACKEN" P-Class module

Deep and dense for the intrepid of you willing to go into the
world of octal.

I'll upload the jpeg and product features, so you will have more
to muse.

Please enjoy and keep playing !!!

TKB only random! PROBLEM

2013-10-07 by Fernando Zarone

Hi all,
My TKB fell down to the ground. AAARGH. The rew/forward switch rod is broken, not a big problem, I detached the two yellow/red wires but now I can get only RANDOM sequences. I mean, no forward or reverse sequence, also when I connect or disconnect the two wires. All of the rest is OK.
What could be happened? Is there one particular IC I should try to replace before I go for replacing all of them? :-)
Thanks

Fernando

BTW now I see that the TKB works ok when I feed into the clock input the gate out from a 5-stage sequencer, also manually pushing the green buttons, but does not work "on line" , only random, when I feed a clock from the DTG!

Hi Fernando,

That is bad news, but I think we can get it fixed.

First, make sure the signal from the DTG is coming from a red Gate out jack instead of the blue CV out jack. Sometimes the CV signal gives random operation but the gate always give a clean transition.

The next thing to do is to make sure all ICs and ribbon cables are firmly seated in their sockets.

There is a good chance that the setting of the SENS trimmer was knocked out on impact, so you might want to try adjusting that to see if you get better operation. Don't worry about messing anything up for now. I can coach you through proper adjustment later.

If none of the above works, can you send me some high resolution pictures of the PCB and rear panel wiring? I have diagnosed TKB faults from photos before, so we might get lucky.

I am blushing, Nick.
Yes, after using red GATE OUT jack it works ok… IS that the proper connection? You are really the king of TKBs… :-)
Last, can you suggest a good replacement of the silver switch for >> << ? it has been knocked when the TKB had been dropped

Grazie!

Using the DTG gate gives strong pulses with nice square edges, more reliable to trigger on. Blue jack gives soft-sided control voltage signal, although you can change that by adjusting rise & fall times to a minimum. No reason for embarassment - It's just a different technique!

But with that blue jack it does not work… could it be a problem of TKB calibration or is it normal behavior?

Re: [SergeModular] DUSG problem…

2013-10-08 by Fernando Zarone

I have solved the TKB problem replacing the FWD/REW switch. The problem now is:
When doing the replacement, the brown wire on one side of the 3 poles of the switch went into contact with the RED wire (on the opposite side of the switch). The Clock was fed by the DUSG; after this, it was dead. I mean, no clock anymore.
I tried to replace the three ICs , nothing. Could you address me to a solution (transistors?)? Could I check which (if ) is broken without desoldering one by one? In that case, is there any replacement transistor I could use here in EU (those are US ones, very hard to find here…)
Please help me save this beast!!!

Thanks

F

Hi,

That is normal behavior. The TKB clock input needs a nice fast transition to work as expected. When you use the CV output from a DSG or DTG, the transition is usually too slow.

Hi Fernando,

I'm not really familiar with the DUSG, since I mainly build TKBs. I know that the DSG uses a lot of selected and matched parts, so maybe the best bet would be to contact Rex or Kevin Fortune.
