serge mp3s?

serge mp3s?

2001-03-09 by matt wilson

as most/some of you know, rex probe, president/owner of sound transform
systems (makers of the
serge) really hates the thought of having serge audio files available on
the web.

so we ought to do it! ; )

SMOG allocates a fairly large amount of disc space for us on yahoo!
groups, 20 megs.
using the "file" section, members can upload whatever turns them on, in
whatever file
format as well.

i think it would be fun to have some sonic tidbits up there, both for
our own edification as
well as for the public. i have had several people ask me "where can i
hear a serge?", and
i'm sure johnp from egres gets this request all the time.

so feel free to post your sounds. i would think .wav or .aiff would be
appropriate for shorter
specimens, and mp3 for longer pieces.

lets hear your thoughts/actions.

have a great weekend!

matt

Greetings.

I am not a Serge user, I will soon obtain a double Wiard system. Possibly I
will add some Serge-exclusive stuff later.

Several recordings show the overall musical power of Serge systems very nicely.
But what about examples of more general stuff, in order to be able to compare
the core elements to the other modulars I have (one has) operated? I've
actually gotten requests for this kind of demos by Europeans (thanks John
'Egres') since Serges are so rare over here.

Cross-fm of both VCOs' sinewaves over full range, demo of envelope range,
"common" freqshift and ringmod routings, WAD, phasers, etc etc; to curious
modular seekers to hear such common routings would be most useful I think.
(Aiff/ wav highly recommended.) Anybody interested?

Also, if there are Serge-owners around Germany reading this -- I would be a
happy guy if invited to visit and play... possibly bringing my Wiard along then
:)

Best regards,
Sebastian Kuehnl

A good idea! I'll try to post some MP3s soon.

Re: serge mp3s?

Hi guys,

When I put Egres up a few years ago I talked to Rex first. I thought it'd be a
good idea if we could at least be on a 'wavelength' before getting into this
thing... also wanted to avoid any misunderstandings about intellectual property
rights etc... He said he didn't like the playable sound file thing so it
seemed like a reasonable gesture on my part to follow that, plus I never heard
a sound clip on any site that made me want to get any particular system... I
guess I need more of a hands-on thing.

Having said that, it wouldn't hurt to put a few clips on, maybe as
illustrations of what modules sound like.... @ 128k encoding, mp3's run about
a meg a minute, so you can put a little more than 15 minutes into 15 megs. I
would imagine that higher codings take more space.

Good Luck,

John P.

For sound files primarily intended to make you say "I want THIS one", I confirm
you, meaning that neither of the Modcan, Wiard, Arrick etc (exception maybe:
MOTM) demo files demonstrate the range of individual properties of the
different systems - because it is simply impossible (which I suppose to be Rex'
main concern, along with creating preconceptions).
Thus I'd be interested in the opposite, hearing (realistic sounding) examples
of more general operations.

Best,
Sebastian Kuehnl
