'Animal' driven by FR Mobius?

'Animal' driven by FR Mobius?

2002-07-28 by circlesround

Hello,
I have a bit of a neophyte-ish question...
On many occasions, I have come within a hair's breadth of purchasing
an STS 'Animal' (pre-formatted panel) as a way of swimming with the
Serge crowd - and not drowning financially.
My question relates to controlling this synth via an external
sequencer. I would love to purchase the TKB unit to accompany this
panel, but alas, this would be an extravagnce I cannot justify. I do
however have a Future Retro 'Mobius' which is sitting idle at the
moment, and wondered if this could be used to drive the 'Animal' (and
also allow me to control it with a MIDI keyboard due to the Mobius'
built-in MIDI/CV converter)...any thoughts on this notion of mine?
Would it work? If so, how?
Thanks &
All the best,
Trevor

If the Future Retro has the midi/cv converter you're all set. You might need
to buy or fabricate a whatever - to - banana cable, plus figure out the
grounding.

The Animal is a spiffy one-panel synth. You can do things with it that other
mini-synths and even big synths can't touch.
Examples: It looks like you got 2 oscillators, right? The PCO and the NTO.
Well, you can patch up the top section of the smooth/stepped to oscillate,
and both halves of the DTG, and the filter too! That's six oscillators total
bucko! Likewise, the DTG's and the top of the SSG can also be patched up as
filters..... but enough...

As john p. said, no problem. the mobius is quite well specified, and would make a neat complement to an animal panel.

as i'm sure you've done, take a look at the animal graphix at EGRES. at the most basic level, the mobius' CV out would control your oscillators and/or filter, and the mobius gate out would trigger your DTGs. but, since the mobius also has a 5+ accent out, you're able to do neat things to your filter and your wave multiplier as well. have fun: send a 5v trigger to your filter at the trig in!

(also as john said): you're going to need the right cables; in this case, 1/4" to banana, and you're then going to need to ground up the two machines. grounding, in this case, would be as easy as running the ground signal from the back of the serge power supply to a jack sleeve on the mobius.

keep in mind the mobius runs one sequence at a time. if and when you upgrade to a larger system, you can either add a TKB, another mobius, or do what i've done: get a doepfer maq 16/3 (around $500 used, i think), which has quite a different OS/hardware setup than the mobius and runs three sequences at once.

enjoy! let us know how you make out.

Agreeing with the others....
The Mobius (or FR777 version) is an excellent way to control some Serge
modules. I *haven't* had to do anything special to ground the two.
The grounding issue seems to vary a lot and often from day to day. In my
case I've used the FR777 may times with my Serge and just run cv and gate
cables to the banana/mini jack adaptor strip I had Rex put on the space next
to my Frequency Shifter.

It's not a custom job.
The Frequency Shifter electronics take up slightly more than the usual
module panel space, therefore you either have to have an adjacent blank
space or include one of the Serge modules with few electronics.
I chose an adaptor -banana to mini.
It's all standard stuff I'm afraid.
