Good Morning, Noon or Night,

Have been offered these three beasties (Jupiter 6 , CS-60 , SH-5) in a trade
and was looking for any recommendation as to which one to pick.

Any takers?

Regards,

NIKOLAS

Depends on your needs and also on what you would have to give up in the
trade. The JP-6 has a cool filter, sounds great and is polyphonic. The SH-5
is mono with a *very* nice ring mod. I'm not too familiar with the CS-60.
The archives should provide you with more than enough info on these synths.

Personally, I'd pick either the CS-60 or SH-5 over the Jupiter 6. The

CS-60 is a flexible and rich sounding polysynth (I don't know if there are
any MIDI kits for it if that concerns you), closest thing to a CS-80 you
can
get without having to pay for a CS-80. Even given my dislike of things
Roland
I must concede that the SH-5 is a very nice sounding feature laden mono,
only
things I might pick over it monosynth wise would be a like a Yamaha
CS-10/15/30, Pro 1 or maybe...a 2600 hehe.
I think the Jupiter 6 is disappointing sonically, and I find I'm not
the
only person who feels that way. I was really hyped up to try one and when I
finally did I was pretty let down. Not much animation in the oscillators,
and
the multimode filter though cool doesn't have quite the bite I'd like
anyhow.
It is rather unique at any rate, Jupiter 6's seem to be love or hate sorts
of
synths, so I suppose you'd have to try that one yourself.

              Best Wishes,
                      Fast

hi,

Both you and Steve Hanlon are crazy ;-)
This synth has bite! I will have to make you some mp3s...this is insanity.
*Unison* mod *Unison* mode (and don't call it a "trick).

Thx,

Shawn

hi,

<< Have been offered these three beasties (Jupiter 6 , CS-60 , SH-5) in a

I have never heard or played the CS series by Yamaha so I can't comment on
that. I've never played the Sh-5 either but by looking at it on the net it
has a ton of features and I downloaded some mp3s which sounded really nice
(filter was good).

But let me tell you about the Jupiter 6- this thing can do some tremendous
bass. I just got mine expecting to use it for pads and strings but imo it
excels at harsh sounds, especially deep thick bass. Pop this in Unison mode
and watch out, has thicker bass than my JP-8. I really like this synth...I
just got it up and running yesterday (had to buy a power cord) and I've
already made 12 different patches! Awesome sync sounds, chunky bass and
dark
dark synth strings. The filter is perfect for acid.

The interface makes it very easy to create patches. Everything is laid out
perfectly, plenty of lights and sliders! Its kind of weird because even tho
it has more modulation possibilities than the Jup8 it seems easier for me to

program...I suppose, when compared to the 8, that knob tweaking sounds
better
whereas on the 8 the range of sounds is kind of limited so unless your
sliders are in the exact position the sound will not be as good. I hope you
understand what I mean...

Thanks,

Shawn

hi,

hehe...I might agree with the lack of character, but not the lack of
thickness!

<<I'll not accuse you of that, unison mode of ye olde Prophet 5 is tons o'
fun. >>

Hell yea...I just barely missed another Rev. 2 for $400 (locally). Damn, not

that I need another synth!

Thx,

Shawn

i only said i was let down when i first heard it. then when i put it in a
mix, i changed my mind. i expected it to be a larger sound (like a juno 106
but with a bigger and wider sound). it does sound thin, but drop it in the
mix wth an 808 kick and it sits perfectly.

btw, i am crazy, crazy for my 777

Same here :-) I'd always heard that the J6 was better at high end patches
(strings etc) and not as good with bass, but it saved a mix last week by
giving just the perfect punchy bass! In short order I got a really bright
and tonal bass sound that's crystal clear and not too rubbery.

In certain settings though, the filter can produce a weird "click" that's
impossible to get rid of without changing the patch. No fix for that yet...

Also check out the Europa upgrade of course; it's going to redefine the J6
in amazing ways.

I've always been a fan of the JP-6. I like the HPF and cross mod
abilities... And yes, you can even make some nice bass sounds. :)

The envelope 'popping' can be annoying, but I usually work that into a
sound.

This site details a mod that should eliminate it:

Easy Choice as far as I'm concerned. All are cool synths and each person has
unique needs and taste. But I really would like to get an SH-5.

SH-5 is one of the best sounding monosynths ever made. Quite rare and a very
worthy "find". You may never get another shot at an SH-5.

There will be plenty of other chances to get a JP-6. It's a cool polysynth,
though it doesn't quite meet my needs/desires.

The CS-60 is cool, too, with unique CS-Series sounds. But without MIDI or
CV/Gate (as far as I know) it is somewhat limited in terms of use in a
sequencer system. If it really appeals to you, then you should get that now
because CS-60 is hard to find.

Maybe its a matter of whther you want a poly or a mono. But I'd pick the
SH-5 without hesitation.

Mike.
