Surely. I could use another PCB on the pile : )

Not yet. My metal guys have stalled on the current run of panels.
We need to decide as a group what's going to be included, and what
sliders to use if any.

Would someone be willing to do a slider PCB? I'd buy them, but I don't
have time to lay it out. To me, that's much more appealing than
panel-mounting the sliders, and then wiring them all up. This way a
ribbon cable and only mounting screws could save a ton of time.
In fact, such a PCB would be great for such projects as the MFOS
sequencer, CGS seq switch, sub-oscillator, bandpass filterbanks, etc.

Re: Klee Sequencer, Second Run????

2007-12-16 by wjhall11

mrmike and my son, Will did a MOTM "style" design with a tiny bit of
tweaking from me. Will and I haven't posted it on our Dragonfly Alley
site yet - I'll do so in a little while.

But here's what we mean and don't mean by MOTM "style."

In order to do a truly MOTM standard design with the standard 1" knobs
and with the standard 1U per knob horizontal spacing (side to side),
it would require 16U - one unit for each sequencer step control knob,
switches, and LED. And the standard vertical spacing between knobs
and switches in the upper part of a MOTM panel is 1-5/8 inches on
center. So if one were willing to go to a 16U wide panel to
acommodate the step controls, one might be able to get the remaining
functions in below that. We didn't try.

If you stay with the standard 1" knob size but squish them into less
horizontal space, and put all the elements on a 1" vertical grid (this
is the grid that lower MOTM elements, like jacks, are on) we found it
can be done in 13U (or so I recall).

If you reduce the knob size to 3/4" (like on some Tellun modules) and
squish them together, and use a 1" vertical grid, you can do it in 8U.

But the knobs and switches of this 8U panel won't align with your
other modules' jacks and switches. So it's MOTM "style" not "standard."

To my rather OCD-addled brain, in my experience, when things line up
in nice horizontal lines, it's less jarring than when they don't.
Maybe it even has something to do with how we're build to notice
things that stand out agains the horizon... like prey - or predators.
So anyway - when it comes to building one of these things for
ourselves, we'll have to decide if I'll be able to tolerate the
mis-alignment or if I'll spend too much time staring at the Synth and
feeling like the sequencer is just wrong wrong wrong and so have to
build a 16U thing.

But for any sane and less neurotic human being, I think Mike and Will
did a great job of it. Within the panel everything aligns nicely.

Bill

There are a variety of slider builds using the existing PCB here:
http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21954&postorder=asc&start=25

My favorite layout so far is Foniks panel, but State Machine's build, with it's sub-panel for the
slider mount, really seems to take most of the crazy out of it. =]

This would be so useful !
I've been wanting to do my own fixed filter bank for some time now and
sliders would be perfect.

Agreed, I like Foink's.

I also like:
Adam-V's (I like this one a lot w/ the extra features - external start/stop == SWEET)
Uncle Krunkus's
midgetfidget's

Hey Laurie,

That would be great! Wouldn't that make a sleek Soundlab build, too?
And the guitar synth... I like sliders : )

I was looking at some ALPS/ Panasonic sliders -- Mouser
688-RS45112A6A05 (dual), 688-RS45111A6A08 (single)
Those look good because they are available in single and dual, linear
and audio, but only 10k...

There are some Alphas with color indicators on their shaft, linear and
audio 5k to 100k, 312-619bf-50k for 60mm travel.

Any other ideas for sliders?

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Klee Sequencer, Second Run????

2007-12-17 by Scott Stites

Thanks for posting this here, Jim. I think a second run looks like a good
idea now. As I mentioned in the thread, a few extra in the store will be a
nice thing. It was never mentioned outside of electro-music - I'd planned
to, but things started to add up before I got to that point.

If anybody wants the boards plus parts and all that good stuff, this guy
would like to sell his boards and parts (he's a pretty good builder - he
helped out a lot rooting out errors in the build doc).

http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22499

Sliders would be cool. I could see how a PCB for them could be a universal
thing, too (not limited to the Klee). Good idea.

I like the circular designs I've been seeing too.

Cheers,
Scott

By that, I meant the first run, which turns out I'd understimated. =0)

Do you think that a slider board would be best served as an expandable
series of blocks of either one, two or four sliders that are
cascadable from a top board ?

This came to my mind too. I don't think a block of one makes sense, 2
or 4 seem more reasonable but I like the idea in general. I'm not sure
either whether they need a top board; it may be simple enough to wire a
ribbon cable across multiple.

I was thinking 8, just because I can't think of applications that would
use less than that. But now that you mention 4, that would be good for
getting 12, 20, etc....

I guess multiple sizes wouldn't hurt, as long as Laurie doesn't mind
laying them out. I pay for PCBs by the square inch anyway.

Re: Klee Sequencer, Second Run????

2007-12-18 by evetsterueb

It would be nice to give people the option of using pots instead of
sliders. I may be in the minority but if build a Klee I want it to
have pots. How about breaking this out to sub boards connected by
ribbon cable like many manufacturers use for their rows of jacks?

Opinion: Yes the sliders make a nice graphic display but I prefer
pots. Pots hold up better (no slot for dirt to enter), will be easy to
find replacements for in the future, take up much less space and are
easier to mount. I think it's easier to make a fine adjustment to a
pot especially when the device is not in an optimal position and there
are patch cords everywhere, "noise" in your arm/hand movements tends
to be positional not rotational.

Disclaimer: I haven't read up on any previous debates about sliders on
the Klee or what the PCBs are like now.

Thanks,

Hey Laurie,

That would be great! Wouldn't that make a sleek Soundlab build, too? And the guitar synth... I like sliders : )

I was looking at some ALPS/ Panasonic sliders -- Mouser 688-RS45112A6A05 (dual), 688-RS45111A6A08 (single)
Those look good because they are available in single and dual, linear and audio, but only 10k...

There are some Alphas with color indicators on their shaft, linear and audio 5k to 100k, 312-619bf-50k for 60mm travel.

Any other ideas for sliders?

Not yet. My metal guys have stalled on the current run of panels.
We need to decide as a group what's going to be included, and what sliders to use if any.

Would someone be willing to do a slider PCB? I'd buy them, but I don't have time to lay it out. To me, that's much more appealing than panel-mounting the sliders, and then wiring them all up. This way a ribbon cable and only mounting screws could save a ton of time.
In fact, such a PCB would be great for such projects as the MFOS sequencer, CGS seq switch, sub-oscillator, bandpass filterbanks, etc.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Klee Sequencer, Second Run????

2008-01-18 by JAMES GALLANT

CW,

   Pretty easy to do.

(1) Log into Yahoo and go to the group homepage
(2) Just above the title bar where it says "ModularSynthPanels \ufffd Modular
Synth Panels" there will be some small text that reads "Edit Membership"
Click on that.
(3) If you want to completely leave the group scroll to the bottom of the
new page, past "Step 2 Message Delivery" and click the box that reads "Leave
Group" in the lower right corner then follow the instructions as they come
up.

WARNING:
If you leave the group you may not be able to read any of the posts,
depending on how the group was set up. If you want to read them on the
forum it would be better to change your "Message Delivery" in the Step 2
area. If you're getting all of the posts in your inbox then you have
selected the "Individual Email" option in the step 2 section. To stop
receiving emails and still have access to the forum, files and photos you
need to select the "Web Only" option to the right. Yeah, it's in small font
and easy to miss but that's Yahoo for ya.

Hope this helps,

James
