[ModularSynthPanels] Vactrol Question....

[ModularSynthPanels] Vactrol Question....

2007-11-11 by James Elliott

I think I made my first soldering mistake due to insufficient board stuffing planning (on my part)...

As I was putting my Neural Agonizer together I installed the Vactrols before the trimpots on board #2 (and cut the leads after installation). Because the vactrols are bigger than their "footprint" print on the board, one of them actually encroaches on one of the trimpot's space. When I installed the trimpot, I had to insert it at an angle in order for me to solder it in place - well, the two components are touching each other - the trimpot and the vactrol. Is that a bad thing?? Do Vactrol's get hot? Will it negatively impact the performance of the trimpot, causing instability? Should I just get a new vactrol (because I can't reuse the existing one (as I cut the leads)?

Input will be appreciated.

Regards,
Jim

There shouldn't be any problems if they are in contact. Neither
component should generate heat in this circuit.

I'm surprised when you say the vactrols are bigger than their
footprint because that wasn't the case when I built mine (see
pictures on my website). Did they change the size of the vactrols?
Did you buy X-Large vactrols? Super-size?

ahhh. I see what I did (result of watching "Stand Up Fridays" on Comedy Central while soldering).

I bent the "other" leads around the top of the vactrol rather than the ones that were centered in the footprint print.... sigh.

Well as long as it doesn't cause problems, I don't care.
