new panels are in

2007-10-23 by Scott Deyo

hey group,

the new panels are all in, and i am packing up to ship tomorrow. the
tau pipes are running low, so if you want one... now's the time, my
friends.

next panel run will be instigated next week:
more Wave Mults
Doomsday Machine
DotCom Optic
DotCom Wave Mults
DotCom Bi'N'Tic
maybe another CGS or two -- any suggestions?
i have designs done for a 3U 6-band formant filter, cv cluster, modulo
magic, asm/ rws, inf mel/ diatonic conv, gated comp, vco, 4U analog
computer (all the logic, 2 asr's, comparators), some other stuff...

if That1Guy does a gig in your town, i highly recommend it. blew my
socks off! it's amazing what one guy can pull off live, w/ some weird
and very cool instruments, and a good supply of duct tape! the
showmanship and humor and pure skillz make it _well_ worth the ticket!

cheers,

Hi again,

I'd like to order two of the Tau Pipe panels if you have some left.
Are they on your web site? I don't see them. Let me know and I'll buy
them tonight.

Are any other panels in which are not on the site?

BTW, I vote for the dormant filter panel in your next run. I'll buy two!

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

I think you should release a CGS VCO panel considering you already have a parts kit for it :) I also think the formant filter and analog computer would be cool. Are any blacet miniwave panels in the works?

Also, on 10/10 you said you were going to do the 320R and 120R panels (I'm assuming these are the panels for the tellun daughter boards).

Our process has been held up without them. Bill and Will

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

2007-10-23 by Scott Deyo

Hi Scott,

They're not on the site yet, but a mockup can be seen at:
dragonflyalley.com/jHTauPipeConstruction.htm

Also, most MFOS stuff is done now, the Mankato Filter, CGS Tube VCA and
Oakley ADSR/ VCA.

All 1U are $20, 2U are $25. All are 2U but ADSRs and Tube VCA.

Cheers,

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

2007-10-23 by Scott Deyo

Oh, yeah, I'll do the 120R and 320R, whoops! : )

The Miniwave... I'll think on that.

Re CGS VCO: My design is 4U, 2U of VCO core and 2U of VC waveshapers.
Does this sound good to folks? It's pretty much the "maxed out"
version. I guess if you need a basic, strong VCO you could always do
Oakley or MFOS.

A 4U Maxed out CGS VCO sounds good to me! I'll most likely do 2 of your kits, so you know at least two of your panels will be spoken for. Same with the 320R, I'll be taking two of those. And one of your 5U doomsday panels.

How about Yves fixed filter panel if you haven't done it.

CGS 59 B and a would be nice and perhaps a RW sequencer in 16
configuration or a generic sequencer panel with generic pot boards
(save a lot of trouble)

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

2007-10-23 by Scott Deyo

Yeah, the Yves filter is in the queue, but a bit back there.

The programmer design is done, I just need to decide on what diameter
holes for the pushbuttons.

I second the Yves FFB, as he's just done a PCB run. And how about a
CGS-04? Everybody could use a basic mixer panel.

Other stuff:
120R
320R
Miniwave (CV version)
Thomas Henry XR2206 VCO
Thomas Henry QFG
Wogglebug
stuff from Thomas Henry's new book (Analog Synthesizer for the 21st
Century - available from Magic Smoke)

How about a monster Klee panel?

Woo hoo! Your shop will sink from the weight of this metal....

getting a klee panel would be awesome, but i think there are a number of ways
to configure it. ultimately, im going to need two klee panels, and im not
looking forward to FPE because of expense, and i dont like how their panels
have some flex at larger sizes (am i the only one with this problem?). anyway,
design discussion would be good, if scott were willing to consider it.

Thanks! I have sent a PayPal payment for two Tau Pipe panels and two Makato Filter panels. That's $100 plus $8 shipping.

Let me know if there's a problem,

skw

P.S. In addition to the formant filter, I vote for the Yves Fixed Filter Bank too. I want both!

P.P.S. I think I have some 120R and 320R boards around here, so when those panels are ready I'm in for them as well.

P.P.P.S. I love Bridechamber!

So, let's talk about the Klee. What shall we include? Exclude?
I haven't looked into it too much, but of course I'm willing to do a
panel.

Re: Klee

2007-10-24 by clickmrmike

I did an initial design; very Milton-like, but boring. I did it a
couple months ago, so it does not include the latest options. But
given that those options add a pot, a switch, and a couple jacks to
something that has nearly 40 switches already, I see no reason not to
include them.

Several Frac and non-standard designs exist, including on that uses
slide pots, which are kind of attractive. This is a module that I
wouldn't mind seeing depart from MOTM standards, but a standard panel
would be fine, too.

I sent my panel to the 'ills awhile back, I'll review it again and
have them pop it up on their site. I'll put it in the files section
here, too.

Hi Mike - All - I'm on the road right now but I can get to your
(Mike's) Klee drawing Friday PM. I think Will had fiddled with it a
bit trying to make a strictly standard MOTM style design. Bill

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Klee

2007-10-24 by Scott Stites

I've gotta say, give the external range input some serious consideration - I've grown to love that function, and would have made it standard had I messed with it more on the breadboard. Especially if you've got another sequencer - it would really play nice with a Milton, for example.

Cheers,
Scott (Stites)

I think sliders would be fantastic - I would have done it on my homebrew panel if I had the technology to do it.

What's the general feeling about sliders? I love them, some hate them.
(Don't say it, Scott! ; )
I love the immediate visual feedback of sliders.

The engineering of the panel would have to be perfect, since I'm
assuming we'd do panel mount sliders.

Re: Klee

2007-10-25 by clickmrmike

Yep, but there's new features since then.

I've plopped a scale version of the updated panel in the files
section. This is Milton format, shrunk from MOTM dimensions and uses
the small knobs (like the Tellun shrink boards). It has all the
current features except the Aux outputs. We could probably squeeze
them in with a little re-arranging.

Re: Klee

2007-10-25 by clickmrmike

I think sliders would be cool, but expensive.
For example, I did a layout of 16 75mm slots (and appropriate mounting
holes) in FPD. FPD wants US$40.75 to cut the slots in *my* material.
I'm assuming they CNC mill these, rather than a turret punch, but I
could be wrong. I guess the question to ask is can Scott's metal
suppliers punch these slots to a decent level of accuracy?
Remember, a little slop in slot spacing is not going to be that
obvious, but if the mounting screws are off fromt he slots, the
sliders won't mount. Ow.

I wish my CNC mill was running.

What's the .ppt extension? My Mac isn't opening it, whatever it is...

I think my metal guys can pull the sliders off, they've got that there
newfangled computerized turret punch dealio.

Re: Klee

2007-10-25 by clickmrmike

Right, a shrunk (to fit on 1 page) layout is in the files section.
This is a simple design, and the 'ills have not worked their magic on
it, but it gives an idea of where I'm headed.

I initially had the LEDs across the top, like the Milton, but moved
them just to be different. I'm not sure I like it.
The only design considerations were to fit as much as reasonably
possible into the panel, be consistent with the Milton spacing (since
true MOTM would be huge), and put jacks on the bottom. I prefer jacks
on the bottom, to avoid having to squish my big mitts in between plugs
to turn a knob or flip a switch.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

2007-10-26 by James Elliott

Man, another Blacet module that also needs an MOTM panel (other than the VC Miniwave) is the Binary Zone!!!!! (Is stooge panels doing these??)

I vote for:
MOTM Tellun Daughter Panels
CGS VCO's
CGS Analog Computer
CGS Formant Filter
Blacet VC Miniwave
Blacet Binary Zone

I think you should release a CGS VCO panel considering you already have a parts kit for it :) I also think the formant filter and analog computer would be cool. Are any blacet miniwave panels in the works?

Also, on 10/10 you said you were going to do the 320R and 120R panels (I'm assuming these are the panels for the tellun daughter boards).

hey group,

the new panels are all in, and i am packing up to ship tomorrow. the
tau pipes are running low, so if you want one... now's the time, my
friends.

next panel run will be instigated next week:
more Wave Mults
Doomsday Machine
DotCom Optic
DotCom Wave Mults
DotCom Bi'N'Tic
maybe another CGS or two -- any suggestions?
i have designs done for a 3U 6-band formant filter, cv cluster, modulo
magic, asm/ rws, inf mel/ diatonic conv, gated comp, vco, 4U analog
computer (all the logic, 2 asr's, comparators) , some other stuff...

if That1Guy does a gig in your town, i highly recommend it. blew my
socks off! it's amazing what one guy can pull off live, w/ some weird
and very cool instruments, and a good supply of duct tape! the
showmanship and humor and pure skillz make it _well_ worth the ticket!

cheers,

Yep; I second the binary zone, too.

Actually, given my backlog, there aren't too many panels I couldne't
use :)

Hmm... Binary Zone. Looks cool, but reminds me that I have the CGS
SubOsc laid out and ready to go -- one of my all-time fave modules. I
think my module uses a couple extra mixers for some extra outputs; I'll
have to look at it. I'll post some designs soon for input.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

2007-10-26 by James Elliott

If the CGS SubOsc is ready to go, then I'm game! ...especially if it has individual outputs for each divided frequency. Sounds like the "pulse divider & boolean logic" module is also something that would be of interest as well. I really want a clock divider to assist  with sequencing duties. Sounds like the CGS SubOsc/Blacet BinaryZone will work just fine - but the "pulse divider & boolean logic" module does odd divisions.... DAMN YOU KEN STONE FOR CREATING SO MANY MODULES TO CHOOSE FROM!!!! However, don't let me detract, the SubOsc will work as well.

I think at some point I'm just going to suck it up and "home brew" a big panel containing the more esoteric timing accessories..... A big piece of wood with knobs and jacks sticking out of it :) I'll call it the "Jim's Log of Sequencing Fun"....

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

ive had the binary zone for just a few months, was initially turned off by it,
and im warming up to it again; it has a lot of useful features. im not yet
sure that i would motm-convert it.

ive never event looked at the cgs subosc before. it looks similar to a motm
submux, but on steroids. looking forward to the designs.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] new panels are in

2007-10-26 by Scott Deyo

Well, an output for each division would require many buffers. For that,
I'd suggest the Master Divider (which I also have designed but not
fabricated). The SubOsc is great for Binary Zone-style "square
sequencing", but also for audio-rate stuff, especially w/ the exor
outputs and the multiplied outputs -- they're not perfect, but i think
they sound great.

Suboscillator would be a good idea. There are so many variations that it would help if
someone decided what version I should build.

I regretted passing by the Binary Zone a few years ago, during the
original Stooge panel release. I will consider it again now, even
though it's getting to the point I will have to start replacing some
modules, because my cabinet space is almost filled up! (And I don't
want to use a step ladder.)

Well, it's obvious you need another cabinet  ; )
