Mouser led misery

Mouser led misery

2007-10-11 by gino wong

I have a big pile of 5mm leds, lenses and mounting components from
Mouser. Recently nearly everything I have built up have had holes cut
just a bit bigger and I have ended up using the Lumex part that MOTM
uses on most of their kits. Does anybody have any workarounds or
solutions to this problem.

They are just a bit too small, is there a step up bezel or something out there ?

I just know Scott is going to make sure all of his future panels will
be far more led friendly than the 6.3mm too big for anything from
Mouser panel approach.

When I can get every piece for a module from one place except the led,
I believe a little something is called for.

I use the single-piece plastic bezel from Mouser, cheap, blends in w/
the paint pretty much. The holes are a bit tight but it works pretty
well.

Are you mounting the leds bare or using one of those black plastic collar
thingies? If the former, the latter would probably help.

6.3mm = 0.25 inches. I use this hole size for all 5mm LEDs. I mount
them with a plastic bezel that I get from Radioshack #276-079.

I like this idea, but the Radioshack part is crappy. Scott, what is the
Mouser part for the bezel you use?

crap! the new ones are more expensive.

if it's like the 0003, then yes it's identical.

i use them. i looked at really expensive LED holders and decided that
purple LEDs were bling enough without being put in a 3 dollar LED
cradle.

it also went along with the Synthesizers.com LED bezels ... i'm
pretty sure they're the same.

351-0003-rc
Lo and behold, Mouser says "Xicon's die for this part has broken and they have chosen not to replace it!"
So they recommend 351-0004-rc, which they say is "slightly different," but the mechanical drawing is the exact same. Hmmm...
This bezel also works for the smallish optic cells from Jameco in case anyone cared :)

It's probably the exact same as the 'Shack bezel.

Yeah.
Though DotCom uses the two-piece, in case... it gets bumped from behind the panel?  : )

I think the prices are the same, actually, 7 cents each if you get 100.

Purple LEDs? When did this happen?! I'm so out of the loop sometimes, it's sad...

yep. they're pretty ostentatious. right up there with incandescent
lamps (like on the 960.)

here's a very excellent shot that made the rounds this summer that
shows a purple LED in a system. i think Cynthia used it as the photo
on her Yahoo!group title page for a couple months:

UV's are available as well. Wanted to play with those and
some powdered phosphors...
