Miniwave chassis built

Miniwave chassis built

2004-08-20 by djbrow54

I have my Miniwave chassis built and am now waiting for my Stooge
panel. The module has the Juskiw CV board and the Hylander expansion
board. I made the chassis out of aluminum and brazed the top to the
side and front. I'm just waiting now for the panel so I can line up
and drill all the holes.

I put a couple of photos in the DBJ Panels folder.

Waiting now with anticipation ...

These panels are finished. We are waiting the arrivel of the others
to begin sorting and shipping. Thanks for everyones patience. Good
quality match of MOTM we are. Fast, we are not. :-)

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Miniwave chassis built

2004-08-21 by Richard Brewster

Speaking of the Hylander expansion for the Miniwave, and Juskiw CV
board... I modified my existing Miniwaves (in Schaeffer panels) to add
the Hylander expansion board. Since I was modifying an existing panel,
I replaced the A/B PROM switch with a 10 position thumbwheel. So my
PROM selection is still manual. Now I have a question for those of you
with the Juskiw CV board. How are you using it? Since the PROMS are so
different, I find it hard to imagine switching by CV, except for purely
random weirdness. Of course maybe that's a good enough reason!

How come I made a Schaeffer panel instead of using a Stooge?

a) I wanted a different layout (see my Miniwave panel in the files
area), where the LEDs are more widely spaced in 0.250 inch holes, so I
could experiment. I finally installed some nice Lumex panel mount LEDs
in shiny chrome bezels. These were the third set of LEDs I tried. The
LEDs on my panel align next to the pot that controls them.
b) I wanted to add a multiple.
c) I wanted them in a hurry! (But the main reasons were A and B. I'm
waiting on 10 Stooge panels right now. Worth the wait.).

The very first expanded Miniwave was also made that way by Dave
Hylander.

HA. The randomness is interesting in inself. I let mine sit for
hours (for testing) with a LFO feeding each of the three sweepable
inputs and a scope hooked to the output. It was really quite fun.
However, from a practical point of view, I'm not sure that sweeping
from ROM to ROM is a huge advantage. I you were using a sequence and
wanted to be able to change quantizing automatically and the scales
you wanted were in two different chips.

> How come I made a Schaeffer panel instead of using a Stooge?

Let me add reason d):

If we had to try to keep up with the demand we have plus what people
are getting from Schaeffer, it would kill us. I am glad this other
option is out there. Otherwise, this would probably be like a full
time job.

Stooge Larry, expecting the last of the panels any day now.

My plan is to burn my own PROMs with waves that will be somewhat
coordinated so that switching between PROMs will be useful. I
consider each PROM as a two dimensional waveform surface (X and Y).
The original MiniWave permits voltage controlled traversal of that
surface for waveform selection. I think of it as WAVE = east/west and
BANK = north/south (like walking around on a map). Changing PROMs
adds a third dimension (Z) for waveform selection (I think of it as
PROM = up/down). So with the JLH-2090CV, I can use voltage control to
move in 3 dimensions to choose a waveform. It's not quite as fun as
anti-gravity boots, but it's a start.

I don't know if any current PROMs were designed for 3D traversal, but
I'm sure there will be some forthcoming.

panel options

2006-06-20 by Scott Juskiw

Hi gang, I'm weighing my options on getting panels made for my own
DIY designs and am looking for suggestions from the group. I
currently have these designs that need panels:

Sword of Kahless (ribbon controller) 3U
Dunsel (utility) 1U
Lag Processor 1U
Minimax 1U
Switching Comparator 1U
Trigger Extractor 1U
Gate Delay 1U

I had hoped that Stooge panels would return one day, but that's
looking less likely. I'm aware of Schaeffer and Front Panel Designer
(although I've never used them), but have never bought into it
because the panels aren't the same as the official MOTM: different
paint texture and engraved as opposed to silk screened. Also, I've
heard it can get quite expensive once you start adding all the tick
marks.

I was looking at this site:

http://www.guitarfool.com/Silkscreen.html

and was thinking "that doesn't look too difficult". I can buy blanks
from Paul S. in 1U and 2U widths, which I assume will be the same
paint job as all other MOTM panels. It's only those pesky 3U wide
panels that still have me stumped.

Am I crazy to consider going this route to silk screen my own panels?
And where can I get 3U wide panels that have the same paint as
official MOTM? Or should I just give in and go the Shaeffer route?
Are there some other options I should look into?

Cynthia found a source for 4U panels for the Zeroscillator that match
the MOTM black paint texture. Maybe ask her where she gets them?

Don't forget the HPGL tick marks templates Dave Brown uploaded to the
files section:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ModularSynthPanels/files/DJB%20designs/

The files are named 1U HPGL.fpd and 2U HPGL.fpd.

These are really nice. I may use these templates if I make more DIY panels.
