Hole width for .25 pots?

Hole width for .25 pots?

2004-02-04 by c45a6

Hello!

I am working on a panel that will have a few Alpha potentiometers
involved. (mouser part #31JN405)

The specification sheet shows that the diameter of the shaft is .25
inches. It also states that the threading is M7 x .75mm... whatever
that means! I have a similar potentiometer floating around, and I've
noted that it doesn't fit into a .25 in hole. The threading makes it
wider than .25 in. Unfortunatly, the specification sheet doesn't
show
the total width for mounting.

Does anyone know that value off-hand? I downloaded a few sample
front
panels, and the closest thing I found was a hole that was 2.82 in. I
don't have my tape measure nearby, so I can't tell if that's in the
ballpark or not.

Thanks!
- Bret

There are several panel designs in the Cat Girl folder that have pot holes
for Alpha pots (as I'm trying to use mine up). For example, check the
file in the Buchla type folder in the Yahoo groups Files directory. This
panel was designed for Alpha pots. As you noted above, the pot hole
diameters are .282in, and the Alpha pots fit comfortably into these holes
(with a tiny bit of wiggle room).

If you have a pot on hand, a useful tool is a drill bit template (not sure
what else to call these). These are typically a flat piece of plastic
with various hole sizes in English and metric units. Very handy for
determining the size of a hole for a pot (or switch or whatever).

M7 is the diameter. It's metric. M7 = .2755" OBVIOUSLY... I'd add some
extra "wiggle room". the .282" diameter hole should work fine.

Here's where I found the conversion:

I hope this helps.
