Tellun's ribbon, aka sword of kahless. You said years ago you would probably do a run.

For 5U panel folks --

So... I've had a few duds in sales lately. I'm not sure if it's a 5U thing, or if I came too late to the gig on certain designs.

Chime in and tell me what you'd like to see next. I will do presales on them now, and only do them once I reach a threshold of 10 orders. The presale price will be 10% lower.

What's my next module? Serge Resonant Equalizer? MFOS Wave Freaker? YuSynth Sequential Router?
List a couple and I'll do a poll to find the winner. I can continue that every week, if there's sufficient interest.

I'm waiting for the Wave Freaker to catch on in any format. Once it does, it should be a hot seller! I <3 mine.

I have to think about that one -
The biggest thing that keeps me from buying more panels is the density. I started using the Brewster 1" grid a while back, and it lets me use the available space so much better.
For instance, I recently did a Dual MFOS VCO in 2U. It looks bad, since I'm using spray-paint and a Brother P-touch for labels, but it's really useful.

Here's what that looks like:

Anyway, if I could get more panels like that, I'd definitely buy more.

Just my $.02

+1 for the density.

That said I'd like a Serge Resonant Equalizer panel with faders,
maybe five columns in two rows if possible in 1 HP. But it would be
tough to mount the PCB this way as the faders would require their
own PCB. Maybe parallel mounting to the fader PCB?
Or a dual panel for it in 3 HP.

With the 1" grid a full pot version could be fit into 1 HP (9 pots, 4 jacks).
Would need a special bracket for mounting then though.

A living VCO panel wouldn't be a good move for Scott. Since Jurgen has passed away, you can't get the boards any longer. Perhaps someone will eventually get the rights to manufacturer them again some day.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Next new 5U panel? You tell me!

Maybe Scott can do a limited run of the Living VCO for people like me who already have the boards? I'd pay up front. But I agree, it would probably not make much business sense to keep it in stock.

Wasn't there some talk on EM or Muff about somebody manufacturing the boards and having the profits go to his family?

Kind regards,
Ben

I might be up for a Sword of Kahless panel, but definitely would be up for 3xLiving VCOs and 2xTrapezoids.  Also 2x Yusynth output and 2x pretty much anything Yusynth or Ian Fritz if the PCBs are available.

I've also liked this grid idea for a while. I am going to do a run for my own self, but they'll all be blanks that I plan on using paint markers to label. To start I'll do a run of 1U w/ 16 holes. If there's enough interest they'll be real cheap, but painted real nice.

Nice work Gary!

Re: R: [ModularSynthPanels] Next new 5U panel? You tell me!

2012-06-27 by Scott Deyo

The Living VCOs kind of got stymied by different wants and needs. I think there's around 4U of variation! Myself, I will probably 'grid it' into 2U! If everyone could agree on one design to make it worthwhile, that would help. It may just be consigned to the FPE bin, though -- but at least everyone could get their wishes! As much as I've (very ironically) grown to dislike FPE panels, they do have their place.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the interest in the Sword! I've always wanted one, and that is a big motivating factor :)

I want to do the Wave Freaker, but something is bothering me -- I really want to do individual outs for wave mixing. Alas, they are at a few different levels. Too bad, because there is definitely space on the panel. I'll do it anyway, of course, but it looks like the Swords are in the lead.

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Next new 5U panel? You tell me!

2012-06-27 by Julian Ware

I'd prefer a run of panels for the Scott Stites Appendage, it appears to be a superior fully DIY ribbon controller package, without having to buy any doepfer kit and many people (including me) have kits already, the documentation is excellent, I have the PCB and kit already populated and there is a build and support thread on electro-music - there are a few 5U designs already.

http://www.theelectronicgarden.com/images/Appendage2.jpg

Also I really would like the combo 4ms clock Shuffling Clock Multiplier/Rotating Clock Divider panel which was discussed here a while back, I recently bought the kits for these, I can't believe there is not more interest in these, probably people understand how cool it is to have shuffle/groove/swing in their modular systems.

I've also liked this grid idea for a while. I am going to do a run for my own self, but they'll all be blanks that I plan on using paint markers to label. To start I'll do a run of 1U w/ 16 holes. If there's enough interest they'll be real cheap, but painted real nice.

For instance, I recently did a Dual MFOS VCO in 2U. It looks bad, since I'm using spray-paint and a Brother P-touch for labels, but it's really useful.

Here's what that looks like:

Anyway, if I could get more panels like that, I'd definitely buy more.

Wow - if you did that I'd likely buy a ton of them. I had thought about doing that myself - my plan was to make the holes 'pot size', and I'd just drill out the ones for jacks.

I'd have an appendage panel

I'd prefer a run of panels for the Scott Stites Appendage, it appears to be a superior fully DIY ribbon controller package, without having to buy any doepfer kit and many people (including me) have kits already, the documentation is excellent, I have the PCB and kit already populated and there is a build and support thread on electro-music - there are a few 5U designs already.

I could use an Appendage panel but I could see where I could use a densely punched blank wheras you can't do that with a sword. If you can't get a sword panel, you don't have a sword. Wait. I just shot myself in the foot.

I would like to see how that looks. I remember getting some gear with black 1/4" plugs where the panel was punched but no jack installed. They could be geld into an hd panel. I see it as a temporary solution as a proper panel is my preference but fpd panels can get hugely pricey and BC can't make every panel (yet).

5U "Tight Grid" panels

2012-07-01 by Scott Deyo

About this here possible "Tight Grid" run, I have some questions:

If I make them from a thinner metal like MU, I can put a flange in there and we wouldn't need a separate stainless bracket for boards. Cheaper, lighter, more productive.

16 holes in 1U, or 18? With 18 it's a .875" grid, and you could even fit things like the YuSynth FFB in 1U, or the 4ms SCM AND RCD w/ expanders in 2U, maybe. Or in 1U you could fit THREE LPGs (with compromise(s)). Or... etc.

Plugs could be used in unnecessary holes, or use them as built-in multiples, mixers, etc.

Paint will be the usual nice, textured deal. Just no screen

Don't worry, I'm still going to do standard MOTM and MU, but just want to gauge interest in this.

Those interested, do let me know how many you'd like. The more the cheaper. And I'm making mine dark brown w/ cream lettering -- the ol' Korg coffee 'n' cream :)

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] 5U "Tight Grid" panels

2012-07-01 by Ben Stuyts

I'd buy some. The integrated bracket sound like a great idea, but how much thinner would the panel be?

I assume a 16-hole version would have the same dimensions as a 1U multiple? Then that's the one I'd prefer, because it matches better with the existing 5U grid: same as the multiples, and the bottom two rows line up well with the bottom two rows of jacks on other 5U panels.

Re: 5U "Tight Grid" panels

I need 2 1U panels and 4 2U panels. 16 holes per unit works for me.

Re: 5U "Tight Grid" panels

2012-07-02 by Mongo

Hi Scott -

I'd stick with 16 holes - The wiring can be really tight on these things, and the 1" grid allows you to use switched pots.
Regarding color, I hope these are available in good old fashioned black. Otherwise I'll need to spray paint them when they get here.
Can you give us any more details on the flange? Some of the boards (Teezer for instance) are quite large. How would we mount those?
Also, how are you going to approach the hole size issue? I was thinking it might make sense to make the bottom 4 holes large enough for jacks, make the top two LED size, and make everything else pot size. If we need more jacks, or want to change the LEDs to pots we could just drill them out.

Thanks
Gary

Re: 5U "Tight Grid" panels

I've been using panel mount LEDs that fit in 3/8 holes. In my opinion, generic panels should have uniform holes.

I'll do all of them black except mine, don't worry about that! :)

I was thinking all holes should be .25", which works for toggle switches and cheap LED bezels. With thinner metal it would be super duper easy to make the holes bigger w/ a uni-bit.

I was thinking thickness same as MU, or .0625". Half as thick, half the weight, but the bend gives it strength.

I guess if there's enough interest I could do 1U 16 and 18 hole, 2U 32 and 36 hole.

I think that's great Scott!

One thing I was thinking about last night - one of the things that keeps my backlog from getting finished sometimes (like right now) is the problem of designing panels. I tend to do a lot of combo modules, and getting the final design made can be a real hassle. If I have these universal panels, I don't need to worry about it. I can stuff half the module, see how I like it, and change things later. That would be so friggen nice.

I'll buy some as soon as you have metal.

Gary

Hi Scott,

Any news on these panels?

Best regards,
Ben
