Thomas White Panels

2011-01-01 by Godric

Hi the panels I posted yesterday have been reworked to match the style of the rest of the modular they will be adorning - not everyone likes white-text on black panels.

I've also rearranged the controls substantially on both panels (particularly the MFOS sequencer as I am having dual-concentric pots custom built for me).

Very grateful to Thomas for the starter on these panels.

Happy New Year.

Oh cool, sorry Godric!
I should have actually opened the files and not been such a lazy git : )

Any chance of you having extras of the dual-concentric pots? I bet loads of us would be interested in buying some!

Ditto.  I have been looking for something like these for a while and they seem practically nonexistent.  They'd be great for coarse/fine tuning, etc.  As long as they don't cost, you know, US$25 or something :-S

Count me in for some if the price is reasonable...

a couple times i've found concentric pots (surplus, ebay), only to by stymied trying to find knobs for same. would sure be interested in pots & knobs...

Hmm Good price doesn't say whether they are linear or log taper.

Are the two pots both the same value?  If so, they'd be useless for coarse/fine tune, wouldn't they?  I assume you'd want a 100k plus a 10k or 1k, and wire them in series, no?

Actually, I'd like the "push-pull" style pots even better:

http://store.guitarfetish.com/PPOT250-250K-PushPull-Pot-Switch-Module_p_614.html

...assuming this is what I think it is: push or pull the knob to activate the second pot. This way, you'd only need one knob.  On the downside, the pot indicator (dot or line or whatever) would become meaningless, so you'd have to use "blank" knobs.  But only ONE knob for each pot!  And for the fumble-fingered among us, it's easier to use than the concentric type.

I could live with the blank knob problem.  I'd typically use this for coarse/fine tune (either on a VCO or a sequencer), and I set these by ear, so I don't really care where the knob points.

If nobody knows the answers about these, maybe I'll pick up a couple and play around with them.  Although they do say "available soon..."

If we did a group buy on custom concentric or push-pull pots, would everyone want both pots the same value, or some kind of 100k/10k or 100k/1k thing?

My understanding of the MFOS sequencer circuit is that both pots are the same value between 50k and 500k

Re: [ModularSynthPanels] Re: Thomas White Panels

The pots are the same value in this case.

As far as tune vs fine tune, for many , not all, of the schematics, the Tune and Fine Tune values are identical for both pots. Depends on how they are implemented in the circuit really. The custom fab places will intermix the parts: resistance and tapers as you require.

As for the other questions below the link. It's up to what works best for you. I myself would prefer two separate controls.

that's a single pot with a push/pull DPDT switch. mouser has 'em for $4.14@: http://www.mouser.com/_/?Keyword=313-1600F&FS=True

ergonomically, you wouldn't want a single knob, tho... as soon as you pushed/pulled to move from one pot to the other, you'd likely jar the setting on the first one.

and as others mentioned, you typically don't need different values... for vco course/fine freq controls, for instance, you just connect the wipers of the 2 pots to your CV summing node through different value resistors.
