Absolutely. They can never be cheap enough. My father used to sell items that he had made his money back on many times for next to nothing. He made pennies on the older item but they always flowed in , people liked him.

Perhaps If there is a method to use an FPE layout so an independent operator could use the data that would be just grand. There is a need for every level for this stuff.

That's precisely how Julian created the last couple of panels for me...

"Open Source" = a binary distribution for certain platforms? Thanks a lot, man!

Some really good Open Source EDA/CAD/CAM packages out there to compete
with proprietary formats and software and You call a binary release
open software?

Many times people mistake "Open Source" to mean "runs on Linux *AND*
MacOS." Nothing could be further from the truth. I often go to
people who make this mistake and tell them politely what they got
wrong about the phrase "Open Source". They usually then tell me that
it's not like "Open Source" is a clearly defined term in the first
place. Of course, it *is* a clearly defined term.

I sincerely hope there's a source release of FPD 4.0. Think of how
much more business those companies would do if FPD came included with
every major Linux distribution?

Hmm.. I never thought it that way. I was thinking how much losses it
would make? People making a font driver better than for the included
Autocad fonts and making export to DXF possible.. way baby, they could
even include FPD export or even printing solution to use with other OS
applications.

I'm just very pleased that I no longer have a reason to keep a PC around!

To use FPD for third-party manufacturing, you're supposed to pay a licensing fee, I think, which makes good business sense for them. I should see if my metal fabbers would use FPD files. I do like FPD for CADs, but the finish, graphics and cost throw me off, though the cost is not bad for a one-off, really. Still, Julian is less expensive.

I found this in the FAQ:

Which export filters are available?
We offer a filter to export Front Panel Designer files into files with DXF extensions.

The DXF export filter can be purchased for $148.00 by email from order@... or with the ordering program in Front Panel Designer.

I don't know what DXF is, but I'd guess this is it.

DXF is Drawing Exchange Format. It is used by AutoCad and many other cad programs as a neutral drawing format so different cad programs can exchange drawings without significnt loss of information.

If the filter does DXF to FPD conversion that would open up the use of many different cad programs on the PC as well as Mac.

No. It's other the way around: an export filter to make DXF from FPD
(most likely Windows only and it's quite cheap).

I would not hesitate to ask for a quote for a panel made as DXF, most
likely they can convert it and do an competitive offer. The power of
Frontpanel Designer lies in the simplicity of the use (once You have
Your repeating elements like dials ect. made) and WYSIWYG from the
tools setup from the machinery.
