moog 901a, b clone

moog 901a, b clone

2009-10-05 by dan

Hello !
Have been building clones of the moog 901a and b modules.
0,5W carbon resistors, 2N4058 and 2N 3392 transistors
and CA3019 and big pcb´s like the original
I can´t compare the sound to the original, but i think its warm and fat.
But there is one small issue
in higer pitch there is some modulation in the wave, like realy fast vibrato,
How do the original moog 901 sound in the higer pitch regions?

You can find a sound example in the files menu

I believe Mike Peake has been working on cloning this oscillator as well. You can contact him on the Electro Music, Modular Synth or Muff forums if you like.

I have also been working on this (single combined board). Just
yesterday I mounted the board in the panel and had a quick listen. I
don't recall anything odd but will check out this week.

Good work,

Do You have parts placement/ silkscreen to go along with that? I'm
also interested about the Synthi Trapezoid..

I have been thinking about providing Illustrator artwork for the 901 - not boards. Let's see how error free this board is (rev2). It is still quite difficult to build and certainly in the not fun to calibrate. Seems to sound good though.

As for the the synthi trapezoid it was done earlier (freehand - no layout) on prototyping board so I don't have a layout I could give out.

Hello Dave !
Was looking on your project before i began with my own. even trying to figure out where to place the parts..but ive gave up this and found some
pictures of the original pcbs ..and made my own layout after this,
4 pcbs, 1 controller and 3 oscillators. got the controller and osc 1 work..still need some parts for osc 2 and 3

Haha...found the issue.... my NordLead 1 is creating the modulation...it is 10 inches from the osc controller card...it gives 50Hz interference from its powersupply

There is one thing about Moog Modular oscillators that you should weigh before building some and that is that they are only a superior device when used in a full bandwidth system like modules that spec out like 900 series modules you can of course use them with other things with the inherent risks and occasional benefits. There are other oscillators with lower output, lower fidelity, more features, higher stability, and easier tuning and service. Now that I have a choice, I don't use mine as much anymore. You should know I started building to expand my system 15 and 55 at a reasonable price.

This expands on our personal post Dan, I know you are cloning the whole system so it doesn't apply to you in the strictest sense. I would suggest you do a sync mod to you 901s.

Hello Gino!

Have no plans to clone a big moog modular, but having almost all parts for 2 open system minimoogs, got the second (original moog) and the third (Clone) generation oscillator boards and 2 filter-vca boards (Clones)
only 2 dual contour boards left to do. the 901 oscillators will include in this systems for now.

Have plans to include my own clones of the discrete mixer CP3 and 904A and 902.

Besides this ive got a 64 modules modular with Dotcom,Motm,JH,CGS,Mfos,Blacet,Oakley, Yusynth
and Club of the knobs modules

As you notice i have no time to make music...haha

Did this demo for clavia on the nordlead 3 for a few years ago
