new panels

2008-04-22 by Scott Deyo

Hi all,

I've got some new panels on the site -- 10 new Oakley, YUSynth FFB, CGS
VCO. More in three weeks or so...

New PCBs -- Ian Fritz's Threeler VCF and ChaQuO, Wogglebugs.

New parts, stuff like that.

Hope everyone is doing well and having fun building,

Scott, did I ever tell you I hate you. I might as well start signing my paychecks over to you :)

Expect an order from me (very) soon. And thanks again for making these awesome panels!

So Scott, if you're stocking Ian's PCBs, are panels in the works?

They are. Should be three weeks or so.

I'm also out of 3-pot brackets for now, though I have a few old 3-pot
Stooge ones left.

op-amp project board??

2008-05-04 by Mark

I'm in the process of getting ready to build the JH Tau Phaser. I'm
building it in a separate box. So far, it will have ten knobs, eight
jacks, and six switches. Which is one reason why I am not building
it as an MOTM-format module.

So I need to add several summing, buffer and other circuits, and was all set
to buy a bunch of these:
https://bridechamber.sslpowered.com/bridechamber.com/Buffer%20Inverter.html
until I realized it was for *single* op-amp, and that a TL071 and TL072
have different power pins. Now I'm not sure if I should be mad at
Scott or Texas Instruments :)

The MUUB-2 and MUUB-4 seem like fine products, expecially for people
who want to share circuits. However, having all those labeled
connections for summing ladders and trinpots and such take up quite a
bit of space, and I severely doubt I'll have the room.

While I could build on plain perfboard, it's prone to error and a bit
of a PITA. So does anyone know of a simple, general purpose project
board suitable for a quad or dual op-amp??

Also, does anyone have any good switch suggestions?? Since this isn't
MOTM-format I thought I should save some money by buying different
switches, but it is very hard to tell what what isn't crap by looking
at a catalog.

Ken's buffer/inverter boards:
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs70_mix.html; 4 inverting buffers
w/ multiple inputs on a 2"x2 pcb.

Be mad at everyone! : )

But Ken's CGS Mixer will work for many things, and is pretty easy to
mod if needed.
He also has some "dev mod" boards or something; they might work for
that.

The MUUB-4 may be biggish, but you could do quite a bit on it, and
pretty easily.

[ModularSynthPanels] Re: op-amp project board??

On 5/4/08, data2action put forth:

That's good :) Thanks, I'll probably get one of those. Those four
op-amps will cover the CV mixer, it's re-inverter, the reversing
attenuator for the envelope follower, and the output buffer for the
LFO.

Then I need another board to build an envelope follower, a 5V source,
and a driver for a vactrol controlling resonance. Speaking of
driving vactrols, any suggestions on an op amp that can source 40ma
at 10V?? I'm not much of a discrete transistor guy. It seems as
though the OP275 can just about do it if I use a negative voltage.
Many data sheets don't even mention output current.

On 5/4/08, Scott Deyo put forth:

Yes, it looks like a very useful product, maybe I'll order extra.

From the look of it one could get a bunch of his little boards
(utility LFO, bandpass filter, etc.) and cobble together a unique
drum synth or something.

>He also has some "dev mod" boards or something; they might work for that.

I took a look at this one, but I can't tell how the traces go:

http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs71_dev.html

>The MUUB-4 may be biggish, but you could do quite a bit on it, and

True, although the enclosure I'm planning to use is only 3" H X 6" D
X 8" W. So there is no way two of them along with the JH board (6
1/2" X 3 1/2") and a transformer will fit. It has a beige front and
brown top and sides not unlike the original Tau Phaser, and will fit
perfectly in the otherwise-wasted space above my TX-7 :)

While I'm typing, does anyone know a good source for cable by the
foot?? I need some dual/stereo/siamese well-shielded cable. For
some unknown reason, the world's most popular turntable, the Technics
1200, not only has its signal cord permanently attached, that cord
uses the world's worst RCA connectors. At this point, mine only
works properly if I squeeze the connectors with wire ties. So I need
to replace it. I couldn't find the right cable at Markertek, who
sells the sexy Neutrik RCA connectors I'm planning on using. I don't
need a whole spool. I figure about six feet or so should work.

OT electronic parts question

2008-05-29 by Mark

I'm looking for axial polypropylene caps. More specifically, I'm
looking to buy small quantities of 400V caps in smallish values such
as 20nF, 50nF, 100nF, 220nF, etc. I checked Mouser, Digi-Key, Allied,
and Newark. Antique Electronic Supply sells Illinois Capacitor's MPW
series in 630V values, but they don't sell their 400V caps. While
I've found a number of radial caps, it seems all the axial film caps
are either outrageously expensive, not available in the right values,
or both. Any ideas??
