I have nothing against the small-knob layout, but the rotary switch  
causes the problem there, not only behind the panel, but for the  
silkscreen legending.

Another possibility -- a "Spread" control like the "Divergence"  
control in the Cyndustries module. I'd just implement it with a dual- 
gang pot, so we wouldn't have to add any circuitry. I wonder how she  
did the Series/ Parallel control. I assume she used the same PCB,  
right? Probably she did it passively. Anyone know?
