M400S #500, purchased in 1974 from some Boston music store via Caruso's Music in New London, CT. Refurbished in 2005 by the Professor himself. #500 was originally #497, but #497 was scratched out and #500 etched on the frame. Does anyone know what happened to the current #497? Bernie

Well I was the owner of M400 # 328 for 25 years.....Dave Kean sold it for me to a guy in New York so I don't know where it is now. Bad story- I had an Anvil ATA case for it w/ wheels and when the freight company shipped it they turned it UPSIDE DOWN(!) and when the guy got it the keyboard was completely outta whack.Fortunately the tapes were removed at the time. Anybody ever asked if everyone on the list who is fortunate enough to have a Mellotron (or Chamberlin) would tell the list so that we can see how many and what makes and models of instruments are accounted for by this group? I'd think it would be an interesting survey, especially if everyone that has one actually responds. I'll start:Mellotron M400 #886, Kansas, USA (acquired 2001)

M400 # 912 - Original tag says it shipped in Nov '73- I purchased it in the summer of 1988 in San Francisco and still resides in SF. Came with w/muff, volume pedal and Leslie 147- all for $125! Some tapes were missing but original set had Choir, Brass, Strings. Don't think 1st owner played it very often as it had very little wear both inside and out. I think he lived in New York at the time of purchase and said he paid $4000 for it. -Jim _____

I'm the proud owner of a Chamberlin M-1 #86109. I'm looking at the receipts for it right now. I ordered it on 3-2-73 and recieved it on 3-12-74. During the summer of 1974, Harry Chamberlin and his wife were on a midwest trip and stopped at my house. Harry showed me how to take care of any adjustments to the M-1. It has always remained in Michigan except for one gig in Ohio in 1979. There was one other Chamberlin in the area in 1973-74. It was at the studio of the Michigan band SRC. I stopped by to take a look at it while waiting for mine to arrive. Today the mighty M-1 #86109 rests on a table ready to be refurbished as it hasn't been played in a number of years. phil (near Ann Arbor, MI) --- In Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com, "jonesalley" <jonesalley@...> wrote: > > Anybody ever asked if everyone on the list who is fortunate enough to have a Mellotron (or Chamberlin) would tell the list so that we can see how many and what makes and models of instruments are accounted for by this group? M400SM #574, as rumor has it was delivered to a production house in Provo, Utah. It was quite possibly the same 'tron heard on the KFC 'tron clip in the file section. In 1974, it was sold to a fellow in a local prog band. One of the other members of this band owned a small music shop just north of Salt Lake and #574 lived in various back rooms as this music store would periodically change locations in town. It was well-cared for and on occasion played but time and the ever growing distance between band members made rehearsals difficult. I learned of #574's whereabouts about 1990 when I went on a quest to the big city to see if there were any 'trons in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. Fast forward twelve years. I finally get to see #574 out of it's case on a snowy day in April 2002. Three more years went by when out of the blue, the owner of the music store calls me and tells me that the 'tron is for sale. Five months later, two days before Thanksgiving, I handed over my hard-earned cash for my very own piece of musical nirvana and drove #574 to it's new home in the far northern reaches of Utah. #574 shares it's living space with one nut case, the nut case's wife and three youngest kids and the cat. It is in orignal condition - CMC10 and all - and sports the popular Violins/Flute/Cello tape frame. I'm not sure about it's gender but it does have a road case that is the same shade of magenta as my 1997 Dodge Neon! FS. Weller M400SM #574

Ok, #1562 Originally belonged to Don Robertson. Don had long been a legendary figure in New Age and instrumental music, beginning with his 1969 Mercury album Dawn, considered by many to be the first-ever New Age record. He originally posted on this list that he had a Mellotron he wanted to sell right away and wanted to know what it might fetch on eBay. I emailed him and asked him if he might skip eBay and sell it to me instead. He told me that he had fallen on hard times and need money to prevent the loss of his home to foreclosure. Oddly, that is one of the things I do for a living. My wife and I have helped over 23,000 homeowners to prevent foreclosure on their homes. We ended up with a trade. I helped him and I got #1562. At the time, Don was living near Atlanta and the Tron was tucked into its flight case in his mother's basement where it had been stored since 1982. 20 years inside that crate. He arranged to have it shipped to me shortly thereafter. It was shipped to Virginia by FedEx, and the day it arrive at the local depot, there was 2 feet of snow on the ground. They wouldn't deliver it. So, I put the Expedition in 4 wheel drive and went and picked it up. When I got it home, it didn't work. The only person I knew at the time on this list was Martin Smith. He wasn't home, so I emailed Frank Samagaio who shortly thereafter called me up. After explaining my dilemma, Frank suggested that I check the fuses on the SMS-3. Bingo. (thanks Frank). It fired right up and I was happy to discover that the tapes were shot and it needed a ton of work. When I played it, it sounded like what I imagine a bag of cats thrown into a bathtub full of water would sound like. Needless to say, I have built a few motorcycles from scratch, and have restored a few for collectors. Mellotrons are easier. The rest is history. Please check out Don Robertson and the Dovesong foundation. He is an amazing musician. I will never part with this particular Tron. I have had several others and currently have four in my basement music room. This one is in wonderful condition and sounds just great. It is the only one I have seen with brass tape heads.

M400 #1514 - black vinyl factory covered version with a slightly different shaped cabinet and a Bradmatic label on the back - supplied by Streetly a few years ago. Apparently a prototype (the red one was scrapped!), it eventually ended up with BJH. Evidence of regular servicing throughout its life, also did a period of service with Harris hire. As far as I am concerned it seems to be one of the most stable M400s I have ever seen. Also have an additional four frames. Norm

Hello Jon , and everyone else here, Mine's an M400S, bought in 1989 from Notting Hill Music Exchange in West London for £300 (that was the one (the only) good thing about them being unfashionable at the time, you could still find them quite cheaply then!) - serial no. #581 - was built around early 1972 I'm told. Since moving house from London last year and now living in Bedfordshire I suspect it might be "the only tron in the village" but you never know, I could be wrong.... As far as I'm aware it has had just one major service (not counting routine maintenance by myself), from Streetly by our very own JB in 1978 (SMS2 fitted among a few other things), and since then have treated it to new EMI tapes (got those in 2004 - 4 frames so far). Still very stable and playable but quite a tatty cabinet/tone control not working, and generally needs refurbishing throughout, so money permitting, a trip to the Streetly chaps will definitely be on the cards one of these days! #1080 M400 It was purchased from a guy in Minneapolis who used it in his studio for recordings. His tape frames were mostly classical instruments such as bassoon and oboe. The tron had been fully refurbed by Streetly and came with a letter of authenticity stating that Mick Box of Uriah Heep was the previous owner. It now lives in Bermuda where local music is mostly reggae and hip hop. Out of curiosity I introduced the tron to a reggae keyboard player to see what impression it made and the next time I saw him he said to me, "how is your muhh ... uuhh ... muuhhh ... mummo tron?" At least he got the tron part right and remembered that it was a keyboard.

Stan, I'd just like to say that you and your bandmates put on an incredible performance of playing The Lamb at Progfest '94. Pete Stan Cotey wrote:

Thanks Pete! We only had a few rehearsals to get that together. Nick and Kevin were really the stars for me. Kevin knew everyone's parts and helped me figure out some of the 12-string tunings. Nick had the arrangements totally down; the degree of confidence he inspired was great. -----Original Message----- From: pete [mailto:marabus@...] Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2006 1:55 AM To: Stan Cotey Cc: Mellotronists@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Mellotronists] Re: take a minute to answer, pleeeeeeease? And speaking of Kevin (whose music I miss greatly), if you haven't already done so, find a copy of Thud. Some great mellotron moments on there with the T550 that Kevin had. That guy was just SO talented. Mark. --- Stan Cotey <Stan_Cotey@...> wrote: > Thanks Pete! We only had a few rehearsals to get > that together. Nick and > Kevin were really the stars for me.
