take a minute to answer, pleeeeeeease?

take a minute to answer, pleeeeeeease?

2006-06-09 by jonesalley

Anybody ever asked if everyone on the list who is fortunate enough to have a Mellotron (or Chamberlin) ;would tell the list so that we can see how many and what makes and models of instruments are accounted for by this group? I'd think it would be an interesting survey, especially if everyone that has one actually responds. I'll start:
Mellotron M400 #886, Kansas, USA (acquired 2001)

i can account for 4 units:

mine:
Mellotron M400 #364, Suburban Philadelphia, PA USA [acquired ~1992]

also, caretaker of:
Mellotron M400 #1189, Suburban Philadelphia, PA USA [acquired ~2000]
[it's in my company's studio, and belongs to my boss, but i am the one
that has to fix it when it's abused - i may ask him to just give it
to me - i have made DOZENS of repairs free of charge...]
[responding for this unit because the owner is not on the list]

also, restorer of:
Mellotron M400 #1220 which resides in Owings, MD USA [acquired ~2003]
[again, responding bause i know the unit, and know that the owner
is not on the list, therefore incapable of responding]

and since gino seems to have dropped the list, i know he has an
M400 also, serial unknown, Philadelphia PA [acquisition date unknown]

[there is a definite concentration of them in this area, with brad
and jimmy also within just miles from here... mine belonged to a
local musican that was the original owner - purchased in the early
1970s; the one at the studio was owned by a local philadelphia r&b
producer, and probably turned up on some classic philly soul lps;
the one in maryland was purchased from the orignal owner by my
friend that used to be in a band with him...]

...jeff
as usual, sharing more than anyone really could give a fsck about...

I own M400 #1145 (built late '73, apparently), and my mate Gary who isn't on the list owns a late-ish M400, no.unknown, and a black Novatron which seems to be a bit of a Heinz, with frame and cabinet sporting different nos.in the 1600-range. I think John Henry's hire co.(N.London) own three - John and Martin will know. I don't know if the other owners I know are list lurkers or not.

Hi Jon,

I have M300 no. 005 built in 1968, refurbished by Streetly in 1999 I think.
It has a mix of sounds from all models and I love it. Next best thing to a
MkII.

I also have M400 no. 992 in white. Ex Strawbs tron lovingly refurbished by
yours truly.

M400S #500, purchased in 1974 from some Boston music store via
Caruso's Music in New London, CT. Refurbished in 2005 by the Professor
himself.

#500 was originally #497, but #497 was scratched out and #500 etched
on the frame. Does anyone know what happened to the current #497?

Well I was the owner of M400 # 328 for 25 years.....Dave Kean sold it for me to a guy in
New York so I don't know where it is now. Bad story- I had an Anvil ATA case for it w/
wheels and when the freight company shipped it they turned it UPSIDE DOWN(!) and when
the guy got it the keyboard was completely outta whack.Fortunately the tapes were
removed at the time. My friend Chuck Cobb here in Findlay OH has another M400 I helped
him restore but I forget the #...

M400S #430 (fully upgraded)
M400S #1225 (fully upgraded)
M400S #740 (fully upgraded)
M400S #1072 (fully upgraded)

The 1st 4 are in my basement. Two others were mine and were sold recently.
The others I maintain for other owners.

Curiously enough, I'm the one that started that, too! As a lot of people don't really visit the group home and it's been a few years since that list was started, I was hoping that this method might get some more participation.

"visit the group home."
seems quite fitting for a bunch of loyal mellotron owners,
don't it?

it appears you done good, jon, as we have accounted for quite a few
more than belong to actual list owners. are you keeping a tally?

I have (3) M400S of my own, found in Recycler ads in the early 80's (just as the DX7 came out, boy were they cheap!). These are the "ProgFest Trons", all three played on the same stage by Anglagard at UCLA's Royce Hall in 1993. Also I am the caretaker of a Chamberlin M1 and Orchestron A. I've restored/repaired an M400S for Greg Walker (currently in Utah), an M400S for Ryo Okumoto (currently in Tokyo), and an M400S that now resides in Mexico with Alfonso Vidales.
That reminds me - I have a couple of tape sets I can part with, to whoever may want them.
BBS Cello/Violins/Flute, not very good condition, some stretched, dull sound
Custom Doug McNeely/Mellotron New York from 1986, Boy's Choir/Mixed Choir/Violins, violins EQ'd too bright

Are Mellotrons female? They all seem to have girls' names, except
for mine, which doesn't have a name. How about "Androgynous"? Is
that a good girls' name?

M400 # 912 - Original tag says it shipped in Nov '73- I purchased it in
the summer of 1988 in San Francisco and still resides in SF. Came with
w/muff, volume pedal and Leslie 147- all for $125! Some tapes were
missing but original set had Choir, Brass, Strings. Don't think 1st
owner played it very often as it had very little wear both inside and
out. I think he lived in New York at the time of purchase and said he
paid $4000 for it. -Jim

Both of mine are males. Only one has a nickname. They never told me their
real names.

What I actually call them depends on how well they're working at the moment.

Together they serve as the basis for and very definition of MONEYPIT. :-)

#805 came from Olympia, Washington, so maybe he can be "Olympic". Maybe
#1037 can be named after the Olympic's sister ship?

Just heard from them. They have become snippy and hate the idea.

Now I'm not so sure they're males.

I'm the proud owner of a Chamberlin M-1 #86109. I'm looking at
the receipts for it right now. I ordered it on 3-2-73 and recieved
it on 3-12-74. During the summer of 1974, Harry Chamberlin and
his wife were on a midwest trip and stopped at my house. Harry
showed me how to take care of any adjustments to the M-1.
It has always remained in Michigan except for one gig in Ohio
in 1979. There was one other Chamberlin in the area in 1973-74.
It was at the studio of the Michigan band SRC. I stopped by
to take a look at it while waiting for mine to arrive. Today
the mighty M-1 #86109 rests on a table ready to be refurbished
as it hasn't been played in a number of years.

M400SM #574, as rumor has it was delivered to a production house in
Provo, Utah. It was quite possibly the same 'tron heard on the KFC
'tron clip in the file section. In 1974, it was sold to a fellow in a
local prog band. One of the other members of this band owned a small
music shop just north of Salt Lake and #574 lived in various back
rooms as this music store would periodically change locations in town.
It was well-cared for and on occasion played but time and the ever
growing distance between band members made rehearsals difficult. I
learned of #574's whereabouts about 1990 when I went on a quest to the
big city to see if there were any 'trons in the Valley of the Great
Salt Lake. Fast forward twelve years. I finally get to see #574 out
of it's case on a snowy day in April 2002. Three more years went by
when out of the blue, the owner of the music store calls me and tells
me that the 'tron is for sale. Five months later, two days before
Thanksgiving, I handed over my hard-earned cash for my very own piece
of musical nirvana and drove #574 to it's new home in the far northern
reaches of Utah.

#574 shares it's living space with one nut case, the nut case's wife
and three youngest kids and the cat. It is in orignal condition -
CMC10 and all - and sports the popular Violins/Flute/Cello tape frame.
I'm not sure about it's gender but it does have a road case that is
the same shade of magenta as my 1997 Dodge Neon!

Ok,

#1562 Originally belonged to Don Robertson. Don had long been a legendary
figure in New Age and instrumental music, beginning with his 1969 Mercury album
Dawn, considered by many to be the first-ever New Age record. He originally
posted on this list that he had a Mellotron he wanted to sell right away and
wanted to know what it might fetch on eBay. I emailed him and asked him if he
might skip eBay and sell it to me instead. He told me that he had fallen on
hard times and need money to prevent the loss of his home to foreclosure.

Oddly, that is one of the things I do for a living. My wife and I have
helped over 23,000 homeowners to prevent foreclosure on their homes. We ended up
with a trade. I helped him and I got #1562.

At the time, Don was living near Atlanta and the Tron was tucked into its
flight case in his mother's basement where it had been stored since 1982. 20
years inside that crate. He arranged to have it shipped to me shortly
thereafter. It was shipped to Virginia by FedEx, and the day it arrive at the local
depot, there was 2 feet of snow on the ground. They wouldn't deliver it. So, I
put the Expedition in 4 wheel drive and went and picked it up.

When I got it home, it didn't work. The only person I knew at the time on
this list was Martin Smith. He wasn't home, so I emailed Frank Samagaio who
shortly thereafter called me up. After explaining my dilemma, Frank suggested
that I check the fuses on the SMS-3. Bingo. (thanks Frank). It fired right up
and I was happy to discover that the tapes were shot and it needed a ton of
work. When I played it, it sounded like what I imagine a bag of cats thrown
into a bathtub full of water would sound like.

Needless to say, I have built a few motorcycles from scratch, and have
restored a few for collectors. Mellotrons are easier. The rest is history.

Please check out Don Robertson and the Dovesong foundation. He is an amazing
musician.

I will never part with this particular Tron. I have had several others and
currently have four in my basement music room. This one is in wonderful
condition and sounds just great. It is the only one I have seen with brass tape
heads.

I saw and played the SRC Chamberlin also...it was an M2/ double manual. It shows up on a
couple of tracks on the SRC CD LOST MASTERS...my band STARGATE went to the SRC
studio to investigate recording there back in the early 70s

M400 #1514 - black vinyl factory covered version with a slightly different
shaped cabinet and a Bradmatic label on the back - supplied by Streetly a few
years ago. Apparently a prototype (the red one was scrapped!), it eventually
ended up with BJH. Evidence of regular servicing throughout its life, also did
a period of service with Harris hire. As far as I am concerned it seems to
be one of the most stable M400s I have ever seen. Also have an additional four
 frames.

Hello Jon , and everyone else here,

Mine's an M400S, bought in 1989 from Notting Hill Music Exchange in
West London for £300 (that was the one (the only) good thing about
them being unfashionable at the time, you could still find them quite
cheaply then!) - serial no. #581 - was built around early 1972 I'm told.

Since moving house from London last year and now living in
Bedfordshire I suspect it might be "the only tron in the village" but
you never know, I could be wrong....

As far as I'm aware it has had just one major service (not counting
routine maintenance by myself), from Streetly by our very own JB in
1978 (SMS2 fitted among a few other things), and since then have
treated it to new EMI tapes (got those in 2004 - 4 frames so far).
Still very stable and playable but quite a tatty cabinet/tone control
not working, and generally needs refurbishing throughout, so money
permitting, a trip to the Streetly chaps will definitely be on the
cards one of these days!

#1080 M400

It was purchased from a guy in Minneapolis who used it in his studio
for recordings. His tape frames were mostly classical instruments such
as bassoon and oboe. The tron had been fully refurbed by Streetly and
came with a letter of authenticity stating that Mick Box of Uriah
Heep was the previous owner.

It now lives in Bermuda where local music is mostly reggae and hip
hop. Out of curiosity I introduced the tron to a reggae keyboard
player to see what impression it made and the next time I saw him he
said to me,
"how is your muhh ... uuhh ... muuhhh ... mummo tron?"

At least he got the tron part right and remembered that it was a keyboard.

Um...yes. I can do that. :-) Totally self-serving plug for Systems
Theory. Instrumental, more 'tron than you can shake a stick at.

26 mp3 demos/alternate takes at our soundclick site (see my sig).
Follow the link to "store" to buy the current CD if you like what
you hear.

Are you looking for something that is exclusively Mellotron or "has lots of
it" or "a decent amount of it"? What style of music? The 'tron is found
in all different kinds.

http://www.planetmellotron.com/ has an amazing discography of Mellotron
CDs. It's a great start.

If electronic is your thing... Radio Massacre International -
http://www.rmi.dircon.co.uk/ ...or these
guys: http://www.kleonard.com/kltunes/improvisedwaves.htm ;-)

You may want to check out this guy http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/fritzdoddy as
well. More rock than electronic (and still an outstanding album).

All of the above are Mellotronists list members, and I obviously didn't get
everyone who has some tunes available on CD. Who else did I slight (aside
from Gordon Reid, Systems Theory, Sundae Club, Chip Gremillion of Lift,
Brendan Pollard of Rogue Element, and nearly the whole rest of the list)?

If progressive/AOR is your thing, you'd probably start with old Genesis or
old Moody Blues. Then dive into old King Crimson, Yes, and the load of
others in Andy's discography.

Perhaps a little 70's Tangerine Dream?

...kl...
M400 #805 - td? cliché.
M400 #1037 - then how come my e/g/b tapes are all worn out...?

"Neptune" by CELLULOID....done entirely on just Mellotron (and a bizarre album at that)
also Jasun Martz "The Pillory" has a lengthy Mellotron solo...not to mention the extended
middle section of "Have You Heard" by Mike Pinder with the Moodies.

The Big Top (Theme From Boogie Nights) by Michael Penn & Patrick Warren.

Okay, it's Chamberlin not Mellotron, but it is an instrumental and kinda
different.

M400, number 174, purchased from fellow troniac Dave Kerzner in '94
right around the time of Prog Fest.

Two frames and five sets of tapes (oboe/clarinet/tack piano,
flute/cello/3 violins, brass/8 voice/viola, trumpet/vibes/guitar, string
section/flute/boys choir).

Thanks Pete! We only had a few rehearsals to get that together. Nick and
Kevin were really the stars for me. Kevin knew everyone's parts and
helped me figure out some of the 12-string tunings. Nick had the
arrangements totally down; the degree of confidence he inspired was
great.

RE: [Mellotronists] Re: take a minute to answer, pleeeeeeease?

And speaking of Kevin (whose music I miss greatly), if
you haven't already done so, find a copy of Thud. Some
great mellotron moments on there with the T550 that
Kevin had. That guy was just SO talented.

Mark.

It's occurred to me I haven't chipped in with my info..
I own EMI m400 #140S. I released it from captivity about 6 years ago for £400 ukp. It was a complete wreck with a Gentle Giant tour sticker on it. It came with a story that it came from Jimmy Pages country home,(unverified). It had been stripped of its power supply. Enter Martin and John who rebuilt it so that it now sounds and plays brilliant.

i'm not actually keeping tally, but it seems to me that this is the
lowest serial number so far for a 400?

anyone know: did the series start at 001?

i don't recall anything in the 2 digit range being revealed, or ever
being discussed on the list.

jeff, the pedantic?

I have tracked E4/103S, 104, 120, 121, and 127. Owners shall remain
