Mellotron tapes

Hi Mattia, What you need for cleaning tapes is an alcohol with a low water content. If you can get hold of pure clear meths (methanol) that's good although the purple stuff may leave a residue. If you can get pure Isopropyl alcohol that's better. This is what's in most tape head cleaner solutions - although again head cleaners have dyes and impurities that can leave some residue. Beware of old stuff as all alcohols attract water from the air in time and as with any moisture will make your tapes sticky which is the last thing you want. Also make sure the cloth you use is clean and colourless as the alcohol will transfer anything in the cloth to your tapes while you're "cleaning" them. Do make sure they are absolutely dry before putting the rack back in the tron (and clean your heads and tape guides while you're at it). Cheers John M300#005
