Pink Floyd - Mellotron

Pink Floyd - Mellotron

2006-04-13 by b_loki

I haven't scoured everyone's responses, so pardon any duplicate buzzer-
beating answers:

Saucerful of Secrets - "Celestial Voices" section of title track, "See-
Saw" (Mk II 3 violins)

Singles - "Julia Dream", "Embryo" (Mk II flute)

Atom Heart Mother - title track (Mk II 3 violins, Mk II flute, Mk II
brass or saxophone, maybe in there?)

Ummagumma - "Grand Vizor's Garden Party" (Mk II flute), "Sisyphus" (Mk
II 3 violins, and I think flute and brass, but I haven't played that
record in years)

That's a real flute.

String section.

I was going through some photos when I found this picture which is pertinent
to the recent thread. On the right is Pink Floyd's MKII and on the left is
Graham Nash's. Both are black and gold and represent one third of the
production. Both restored at the same time - it'll never happen again!

Best,

Raises Interesting Question (Re: Pink Floyd - Mellotron)

That certainly does sound like the string section. A very good gloomy
doomy example of it. In the mellotron.com listening room, it states
string section was introduced to the M400 catalog in 1973 (Ummagumma
dates to 1969).
Presumably, he could've created it himself with overdubs (cello +
violins etc.). Or perhaps someone else has insight that would resolve
the discrepancy.

If cello and 3 violins were on adjacent tracks, then would the tapes
be a custom set? The standard set doesn't have cello.

BTW, I have a set of tapes with string section w/o cello; very nice!

String section.

Mike's actually wrong 'cos there was no String Section or even Cello at that
time. He's magnificent testicles though.

I admit that I am only saying it's string section because it sounds like
it, and because I can play that dreary bit of shit on my SS frame and it
sounds right. The giveaway that it's SS (IMO) is that everything from B0
downwards 'buzzes' with the double bass sound, whilst still having a lot
of oomph up top.

Ecoutez plus bien, me old legume. You can hear the cello buzzing away.

No, he *has*, not he *is*.
