M-4000?

M-4000?

Martin- can you give us an ETA of any pictures/previews of your
latest brainstorm the M4000? How about a charcoal sketch? :)

Re: [Mellotronists] M-4000?

Hello Charles and all,
Martin- can you give us an ETA of any pictures/previews of your
latest brainstorm the M4000? How about a charcoal sketch? :)
We have a very deliberate policy here. The initial M4000 production (which is significant for a first run) is sold and once those machines have gone out to their new owners, we will let them do the talking. Writing blurb and offering less than complete images will not serve us well. The customers know what they are getting but not all the features! The suprise element therefore has to be maintained until this run is complete. And of course, bringing a new product to the market place is always fraught with unforseen situations so we're a little late but better to be right than rushed! Apart from the keys, cabinets and motors, we do everything ourselves from making the press tools, jigs and fixtures to pressing the parts, milling the metal, turning the flywheels etc. etc. It's a true cottage industry and not an assembly shop. The pressure is intense but the wait will be worth it.
Best,
Martin

gee- I guess us ordinary folk don't rate knowing anything about your
new product. How is it the "initial run" is sold out before the
thing is even seen or features disclosed? I certainly wouldn't buy
anything without seeing or hearing it.

No you didn't!
We all know that Streetly are going to fuck with us till they're done. We'll see it when they actually build one that works. You can take all the orders in the world but that means nothing. Right now, I'm selling out my first run of guaranteed penis enlargers based on the principle of necessary gravity. I can't show them to you because I'm waiting for the purchasers of the first run to brag about the sizes of their giant dicks. I always say, "let the dicks do the talking."

We have a bunch of loyal and trusty clients from Europe and the US who have visited, viewed the prototype and passed on the word to others. The outcome of this word of mouth approach has been that we have an order book that we never envisaged but are happy to have! We can build without speculation which is a rare commodity. We can now speculate on the next batch.

God...I hope so! Nothing would give new Streetly 'trons instant
credibility than gents of that repute putting their cash on the
barrel-head. No disrespect implied to the good folks building and
selling the Mk VI in my observation. I'm just excited by this news,
if it's straight up -- not that I can afford a 'tron of any vintage

This type of response seems "snobbish" to me...and displays
favoritism.
Would it really undermine your plans and your pre-sales to reveal
details/photos about the instrument to the rest of us, just for
curiosity's sake (and perhaps to inspire us to save our coins for a
purchase as well)?

Just a final comment.
This list represents people interested in mellotrons and we have contributed over the years and given free advice. However, we are a commercial business that has the right to retain information until we feel the time is appropriate to release it. We make no apologies for this and it is standard practice. Vague promises of vague orders to make us reveal our hand is duplicitous, underhand and deceptive. It also lacks intellect.

Martin-all I was trying to do was ask a simple question. All you had to say was that the
unit isn't ready to be revealed yet....period. Your original answer made me feel dismissed
as "not important enough" to show the product to. How do you know that I don't have
enough money in my hands to buy 2 of your units?(I don't) The point is that being polite
and not displaying favoritism is something I learned myself working many years in retail
music stores selling synths.
I applaud your efforts to make new machines and keep the name going. I had an M400
for 25 years-the second one in Ohio in 1972. Since I now use the Pinder CD and other tron
samples you know I still love the sound. When I get my dream studio together I intend to
have a real one again as a permanent fixture. Good luck with your efforts Charles

RE: [Mellotronists] RE: M-4000?

2006-03-05 by David Jacques

What I don't understand is with everyone is so damn upset with Martin regarding his dissing of the group, why don't you just go out a but the Mellotron Mark IV from Markus and Dave? This is a great machine with many improvements. What do you think you are going to get from the Tron Bros? Something better? Why complain when they (as businessmen) make the decision not to reveal their product?
Businessmen are very secretive about their products and I really don't blame them. You see it all the time in the computer industry. We see "Vaporware" appearing with promises of new and improved products, and the actual product never hits the market. I am not saying that the Tron Bros are promoting Vaporware, just that I have learned not to believe anything until I see it.
Frothing at the mouth for information of a new and better Mellotron is really quite silly. People dying for new trons is like people dying for new Hammond B3's. Hammond/Suzuki produced the new B3 a few years ago and the resulting product is vastly inferior to the original (I know as I own four B3's). The Mellotron is a collectors item (my M400 sits in my studio and will stay there). If you want one to perform with, then there is a new model on the market right now, or buy samples.
So I suggest that you take it for what it is, and send your $$$ to Markus. Let the money do the talking... The Tron Bros will continue with their business and everyone will be happy...

I don't see how it could be much better. I guess
that's what we are all talking about here. So much
talk and criticism pointed at the MKVI predicated on
the shipment of an instrument that has been "in the
works" for at least 6 years.

Meanwhile, MA has sold 60+ instruments, tape frames,
tapes, SMS boards, keyboards, new motors and HUNDREDS
of Pinder CD ROMS to very, very satisfied customers.

With that in mind, it makes pretty good sense really
to build and sell a super exclusive, gold plated
capstan version to the very wealthy. There can't be
much "regular guy" market left.

Maybe!
Without taking sides, I think there's a major point that's being missed here, and that is looking at bigger picture as one of having competition with two entities building new trons, which generally tends to feed of each other and initiate further advancements and higher quality (and possibly reduced prices in the long run), and choice for the consumer. Not all on this list can currently afford to buy a new tron, although of course a percentage of them can, and that does not include those who may perhaps want to sell their present 400's for a new MkVI or M4000 (opening up opportunities for prospective first-time 400 owners).
I do understand the frustration people have expressed over Martin's whatever-you-want-to-call-it re: the M4000, as we've been promised new m/c's since the first Toronto workship in 2000; BUT apparently finally coming to fruition witnessed by Paul Marshall's recent posting (having seen AND played one).
Secrecy in business after years of development and before an unveiling IS common practice (anyone here into cars?) Who criticizes Ford or Ferrari in the manner some here have. While there's no love lost between Streetly and myself, I have to side with Martin on this, although also admitting that the present situation could have been handled better from both sides, but again, remember the point that opened this posting.
My question to Martin: Are there going to be be formal (and objective) reviews of the new M4000 in industry publications (i.e., Sound-On-Sound, etc), as we saw for MA's MkVI?

What I don't understand is why anyone thinks that Martin is dissing
the group. I've never seen him do that. Instead, I've seen him
provide the group with information and Mellotron trivia that has not
been available from any other source.

He very politely replied to Charles' initial question giving sound
business reasons why Charles' questions couldn't be answered yet.
Those who have made serious private inquiries about the M4000 rather
than merely expressing curiosity already know the answers.

I've only spoken with Martin once, but I've dealt with him via email
over the last few years and have never felt dissed. In fact, quite
the opposite. He has taken the time to personally insure that the
products I've purchased from Streetly have been of the highest
quality.

Bernie,
How can you have sold something yet not have a price for it? If the initial run is sold, then there must be a cost. Shouldn't there? And why can't we see a photo of at least the outside?

Frank,

I'm not a spokesperson for Streetly, so you'll have to ask Martin
those questions. I'm sure that the folks who have ordered the
M4000's or who have inquired about them know what the price is.

If you were to design a Mellotron, would you start with the cabinet?
As an experienced restorer of Mellotrons, I would be willing to bet
that you think the guts are more important than the cabinet design.

Re: M-4000?

2006-03-05 by bradschuman

This whole conversation just sounds pointlessly bitter for reasons
that are beyond me. I know there's a rivalry between two different
companies that are making the same basic product...but this looks more
like Monty Python's version of "The Battle of Pearl Harbor" with
grumpy old women.
Long story short....I contacted BOTH companies inquiring about the
purchase of a mellotron...Martin responded. The other did not. Had
they done so, who knows what might have happenned.
But NOT responding to a potential customer is no way to make a sale.
I now go back to "lurkdom".

Right.

Gotta get me one of them circles.

Don't know who you're talking to, but they're not the right people. It's a
moot point anyway as they were presold awhile back. The new car is what's
happening and I'm in the loop.

yeah, the MSRP might have been 650K, but NOBODY was
getting them for that price in the trades. It was like
the Ford GT, 139K factory price going for 200 plus in
every dealship in north america..ahhhh the life of the
privileged.

Dear All,
I don't remember Yamaha being given any grief for keeping the DX7 a secret before launching it!
Quite a feat really, launched at a show, in stock at your local dealer. All this after Yamaha had apparently stopped making synthesisers completely.
Standard business practice, 'nuff said...

Yeah but Yamaha didn't tell people before they launched it. Martin and Co. have let the
word out. All I asked for was an ETA and some details.

Speaking of cars….Warner Bros is issuing a special edition of Frankenheimer’s “Grand Prix” this year – it’s about time…..no vague promises - honest!

quality and ethics. It's their machine, let them deal with it ANY way
they want. Relax and enjoy it.

He has taken the time to personally insure that the
products I've purchased from Streetly have been of the highest
quality.

Yeah, that tells us a lot… Sounds like a noisy drill to me…

With all due respect I have been hearing about this mysterious Mellotron for years. I suggest that you all just quiet down and wait. If it shows up, then great, if not… don’t worry about it….
