#1517 has a new buzzy friend...#563

2005-10-17 by Mattias

Hey,
#1517 has a new buzzy friend at Roth Händle studios....#563. It has been in storage at the music conservatory in Stockholm since the early eighties. IT is in a bit worse cosmetic condition than #1517 and has the CMC 10 in it but...
...the interesting thing with it are the sounds...The previous owner actress/composer Gaby Stenberg traveled around the swedish country side and recorded bees and bumblebees buzzing different notes and put them on Mellotron frames. So...together with the Mellotron I got two tapeframes with bees and bumblebees...almost in tune.
I am about to update my site with some other stuff but I´ll soon post some snippets of film with these new remarakable sounds...
Have a great monday...

Almost in tune bees? Think you'll use them for some project of your
own? I can imagine the conundrum, the uncertainty. To bee or not to
bee, that is the question.

Sorry...

Great! I remember reading about this in a Swedish magazine (Hemmets
veckotidning or Allers) back in the late 70's or early 80's. I've been
searching my grand mother's attic to find that issue for ages, but no
luck so far.

At one point I even thought I'd dreamt up the whole thing with the old
lady, the 'tron, and the bees, but now I know it's true.

No you're not, Rick. Own up. What a bizarre find, though, Mattias... No luck
on the Polar Studios 'Tron, then?

I heard about this tron in 1992 for the first time when Johan from Änglagård was searching for a Mellotron-. He had heard that there was one in a studio in Roslagen and started calling every studio in roslagen...He called studio largen and he found Roger Skogh who had helped Gaby to record the bees....
He and Johan started talking and we ended up recording two albums there...but still no signs of the bee tron...
In June I was showing my new tron sounds to some people and one of the girls said..." We have a tron at my school but it is quite useless...it only has bees in it...."
I made some phonecalls...

Still, think what the Änglagård albums would've sounded like if you'd only had bee tapes.
Looking forward to your first project with the new tapes. :-) Out of interest, were they done using the 1/4" conversion kit, or are there three tracks per frame? Even more bees...

There is only one sound on the frame...so I am not really sure...But I got a second frame as well...
I haven't tried them on #1517 either. I wanna clean #563 up, convert the bee tapes to one sound so I´ll be able free up 5 track spaces for more sounds...
There is actually one spot on Epilog where we wanted a bees swarm but I think we did it with a Mellotron Oboe cluster instead...

Hallo Mattias, great story! In all those rare self-recorded tapes of the Me=
llotron history it's
propably the most obscure of all. What you have to tell us all is... how ma=
ny did you paid
:-) ? And did they realize how rare it is with or without those tapes?

Something different: I had a pub gig with my band =BBQuasifunk=AB yesterday=
 evening and
during the acoustic part of the set we used the Tron for the simulation the=
 horrible heavy
pump-organ (nobody wanted to carry it again - we also had a CP-70 with us!)=
. To get a
more or less long pedal note I suggested to switch to half-speed and use th=
e cello sound.
With great success! But the short added H from the double bass to fill the =
tape gaps have
been very low & sounding like a big monster saw...
Also nice to get the feeling during the tape changes that you have a portab=
le museum of
scientific history. All those questions. Next time I have little signboards=
 =BBMellotron, ca
1972, ancient sort of sampler=AB etc. Nice.
