Hi Mark,

I beg to differ. They aren't bass recorder, although I am hearing an
alto recorder on the bottom, possibly tenor, but DEFINITELY no bass.
For three of my 23 years of teaching, I had to handle a recorder choir
and we had a complete set, so I know about these things ;)

The recorders on "Stairway" are also definitely not a tron. They're
live, probably by John Paul Jones since he seems to be able to play
just about anything. If you listen closely through headphones, you can
JUST detect the breathing. All in all, it's a pretty good performance.

They sure don't sound like any recorder I've ever encountered. The tone is
not right. And they're certainly not bass recorders. Those satanic things
live up to their name. I'm pretty sure we're dealing with ocarinas here. I
used to have a clay one which sounded just like that.

I read an interview with John Paul Jones where he said
that it was bass recorders...recorded with the great
Richard Harvey (of Gryphon fame). So......

I went to Lark In The Morning in San Francisco and
bought one....and it sound exactly like that. There
are two types of recorder- baroque and renaissance,
the former has a more reedy kind of sound that is ,
perhaps, what you heard. Markus? You just went through
recording these tape masters, what did you find?

I just got out my recorder and compared it to some
photos of instruments on the web and it looks like
what i have here is actually a tenor. It doesn't have
the bocal that I see on the bass instruments. I have
played this instrument along with Stairway and I can
manage the low notes, but not the higher ones....I
have always just assumed that it's my naive technique,
but maybe it's as you say Rick, wrong instrument.

I'll try to find that interview....I THINK it was in
Keyboard, but it's been many years since I have seen
it. Maybe on the web somewhere.

The upshot of the interview for me was that it
introduced me to the recorder solo records that
Richard Harvey has recorded over the years. I saw him
with Gryphon on the Yes Relayer tour and, while he was
mostly playing keyboards, his recorder solo had the
whole crowd going crazy. It was pure genius. I
recently saw his name as the electronic music guy for
the old "Martian Chronicles" series with Rock Hudson.

I obviously need to give it a fresh listen. I'm still surprised at the
revelation though. It doesn't sound to me like the register of a bass
recorder. Ocarina, I tells ya!

A propos that, were recorder tapes ever made for the Tron?
