Off-topic

2005-01-12 by Andy Thompson

Dear all
Since the list is currently in one of its intermittent periods of turmoil anyway, I might as well go right off-topic for a moment, and urge any of you who may still think that the illegal occupation of Iraq is anything but an abomination to read this article:
And I'm not just blaming America - my own country has colluded at every step along the way. I feel ashamed to consider myself a member of the same species as the US & UK governments and militaries.
End of off-topic.

Hi Andy and All,

Since not everyone on this list is a Leftist, can we drop the world
politics? Most of us could care less what each others' politicical
views are. It's divisive and detracts from the one subject that
everyone on this list agrees upon.

Thanks,
Bernie

Would that be ..uh..happy endings? Steven Spielberg's retirement? The imminent nervous breakdown of Ashlee Simpson? The Mets winning their division (snicker)? The South Park "Stupid Spoiled Whore " episode?

Tape is good.

However, is it possible to have too much tape? I'm currently lusting
after a 2" 24 track machine. The thought of running a Mellotron
through a Space Echo onto 2" tape.... Raise the fader on the console and
hear the onrush of hiss, just like on old Kraftwerk LPs.

At least you didn't say 'Communist'. :-) Bet you didn't read the article,
either.

I prefer Scotch tape. Single malt, of course.

Thanks you for posting this as an OT HU! pointer. I had not seen this
story before, at least not with direct reference to the names of the
individuals in question. It is worth reading, and worth following up.
I shall pass the link on to some other, more politicaly-inclined,
forums, for discussion.

Leftist and Communist are not necessarily the same, as you well
know. I have good friends of both persuasions. We don't discuss
politics because there are so many other things that we have in
common.

No, I didn't read the article because I already know what it will
say. People who have been unfairly abused certainly have a right to
justice.

That's as far into discussing politics as I intend to go on this
list. My intention was to make nice, not create further divisions.

Have a sparkling day :)

Maybe this will make you feel better - creative new ideas from the
Pentagon for winning the war without all that nasty fighting ...

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=mg18524823.800&print=true

THE Pentagon considered developing a host of non-lethal chemical
weapons that would disrupt discipline and morale among enemy troops,
newly declassified documents reveal.

Most bizarre among the plans was one for the development of
an "aphrodisiac" chemical weapon that would make enemy soldiers
sexually irresistible to each other. Provoking widespread homosexual
behaviour among troops would cause a "distasteful but completely non-
lethal" blow to morale, the proposal says.

Other ideas included chemical weapons that attract swarms of enraged
wasps or angry rats to troop positions, making them uninhabitable.

Another was to develop a chemical that caused "severe and lasting
halitosis", making it easy to identify guerrillas trying to blend in
with civilians.

There was also the idea of making troops' skin unbearably sensitive
to sunlight.

An irresistible "aphrodisiac" causing a major "blow" to morale? Attracting
swarms of wasps or rats? Severe and lasting halitosis? Making skin
sensitive to the sun?

Given the recent posts, it seems they're doing their field testing out here
on this list!

M400 #1037 - rats shmats...try 10 years of mice!
