off topic rant with restitution

2004-12-01 by fdoddy@aol.com

Here comes the rant:
God, do I despise Lenny Kravitz! One of these days I'll relate a "great" Kravitz studio story, but trust me, he is a hack. And speaking of hack jobs, my son dragged the family out to see the latest Oliver Stone pile of dung, Alexander. This is, quite possibly, the worst movie ever made. Showgirls feels like The Shawshank Redemption next to this steaming pile of hackneyed cliches and tedious over-acting.
My mellotron string tip for the day: try doubling your 3 violins part with another string sound. In my case it's the m300 strings or my own Angry strings. Pan the two tracks hard left/right. Now that's a big 'ol gorgeous string sound. This an obvious tip, but I used it today and was surprised yet again by how great it sounds.

Yeah. He sucks alright, but BOY is he rich. And anyone
that would kick Nicole Kidman outta bed just *has* to
be an idiot.

It's just further proof that you don't have to be talented to sell records.
This is a sad testimony to the tastes of the masses.
Talent in my opinion has always been a minority.

He may be a hack, but he is a hack with more tape racks than anyone
else, so he can't be all bad. Too bad about that Kidman thing, though.

I have some great Doddy studio stories, if anyone wants to hear them...

I've recently done this with a new Systems Theory track named 'Water
Through Fingers'. The coda features nine Mellotrons - Mk II strings,
cellos, Dickstrings, Sad Strings and a little string section, all over
the stereo spectrum and playing a *sort of* round on six chords. It's a
fabulous noise.

If you want to double up a faux orchestra then you could do worse than
to double up Sad Strings and th GC3 brass. Fortunately I have them on
adjacent tracks on the same frame. They are much better tuned than the
Mk II brass and strings and are (accidentally) weighted in volume and
timbre to make it sound *very* convincing, not least because it's two
sounds that appear fairly un-Mellotronic, if you play them well enough.
