Mellotronists

While getting acquainted with my tron, I decided to play each note 
and listen carefully for anomolies, or "character" as it is called 
in tronspeak.

The flutes sound very nice, exactly like they do on Uriah 
Heep's "Come Away Melinda".  However, two notes stand out from the 
rest, being a little harsher.  It sounds like the violins on a 
neighboring track are coming through slightly and mixing with the 
flutes.  It's not a bad sound, but is it normal?  It could be a 
misaligned head or tape guide.

Also, on the violins, there were some odd thumps and something that 
sounds like a clock chiming.  Maybe if I keep listening longer I 
will hear a barking dog too?

Let us know if your hear the legendary 'scraping chair leg' at the end of
one violin note.  :-)

but seriously... there may be an alignment/guide problem.
a couple of the flute notes on my tapes really cut through
and are much harsher than neighbouring notes. does the
"beeding" affect any other sounds? which tracks are on
the "edges" and what sound is in the "middle" of your tapes?
are you sure your track selector is fully engaging/shifting
the heads? [it's a pretty cranky mechanism sometimes]
watch the whole tape path carefully as you play notes, and
watch the track selector as it shifts... it might lend a clue.

where did your tapes come from? are they old "originals"?

Andy,

My experience listening to mellotron tapes is reminiscent of college 
days when we played warped records on a cheap turntable ... if the 
record didn't skip it was OK.  It also reminds me of an old 
Volkswagon I had that needed engine work ...
