...flows through my mind... But my eyes can only see an EBay listing that taunts me with the possibility of supporting the lyrics mentioned. I don't think that this is the same instrument that was retracted from ebay this past weekend. It appears to be in better order, is located on the other side of the US, and includes a few extras that, I think, a Mellotron fan would interest a true Mellotron fan. I am concerned, however, that the seller has only 2 feedback responses - both as a buyer. On the other hand, the seller does have several other items for sell, all of which are related to music production/recording. By the description, it sounds like the seller is legitamite. I have some questions for you tron owners: Do you need to de-magnetize the heads on a regular basis? How about head alignment - I'm sure that the azimuth has some effect on the high frequency response (...woo hoo, don't we sound technical, now?...) I am also curious, how do 3 sounds get stored on one tape? Is the frame shifted to accomodate each tone; one sound a bit to the left, another a bit to the right, and the third is dead center? Thanks, in advance (Optimistically) Future Mellotron owner, -John Hofmeyer ps. Check out the new Metaphor CD! pss. If anyone has worked with Frank in Mellotron renovation, please send me an email. I think I may use his services and would like to know, privately, about your experiences. Thanks again - may the your (7th) Sojourn to the Krimson Cing present you with Wonderous Stories. [...I like Wonderous Stories just fine. But I like the last track on that disc, "Awaken", even better. Sure, it is a bit over the top - but it is a great listen on a calm, saturday afternoon - just before dusk when you're about to meet up with your romantic interest and you've accomplished something in the week prior that makes you proud and humble all at the same time...]

Hi John, I've never demaged my heads - but that's only because I don't have a demagger, so I guess it's a useful thing to have. Frequency of demaging depends on how much you play the thing and how well you treat it. I wouldn't have thought more than once a year would be necessary unless of course you accidentally magnetise the heads by unplugging and replugging the headblock cable while it's switched on. If you do unplug the co-ax cable for any reason you should short out the centre pin to the outer casing on the socket before you plug back in. You can easily use the edge of the plug to do this. Regarding head alignment - don't touch it! If you seriously think you heads do need adjusting (and I think this is fairly rare) send the whole headblock to Streetly and they'll do it properly. The 3 sounds on M400s/MkII's are recorded on 3 tracks adjacent to each other and they are selected by moving the whole headblock left, centre or right via the linkage connected to the selector switch on the control panel. It's purely a mechanical thing. The last version of the sale plainly stated that the guy didn't want to pay for straightening/replacing those keys. Can we not abstain a bit from the cheap shots?? It's getting pretty tiresome. Another weak assumption. We don't (I will find out) what was done and for how much by whom. Besides that, he claims that it plays great...so SOMETHING must have been done. You need a tranquilizer. --- tronbros@... wrote: > In a message dated 19/2/04 3:28:43 PM GMT Standard > Time, easle12@... > writes: > > > > The last version of the sale plainly stated that > the > > guy didn't want to pay for straightening/replacing > > those keys. I just contacted Kean about this and HE says that the guy spent 1200.00 on tapes, SMS-5, a pre-amp repair and some adjustment to a very warped keyboard that he was NOT willing to spend the money on for replacemet. As for the rest of the money spent; I quote- "The guy spent 1200 with me and god knows how much with a local tech before I got my hands on it. He did insist on driving the instrument up here....so he probably spent a fair amount on that part alone." You know, I am sick to death of being the messanger here and will not be responsible any longer for relaying messages. David says that he couldn't care less WHAT streetly has to say....I don't blame him...but it's just a shame that he isn't here to defend these stupid accusations. I strongy suggest that those who DO care, go to the source and get the facts. This cheap shit propaganda makes the list so much less palatable. Say What!!! Now people are calling the Streetly guys "assholes?" Well, I for one will tell you that they ARE assholes. But they're my kind of assholes... the kind that care about first rate work and staunchly defend it. I have known those assholes for many years and they've always been straight up with me. I do a lot of work rehabbing 400s. I'll put my work up against anyone's. I will also tell you that without Martin's and John's support I would not be able to do the job that I do. I also pull money out of their pockets. They've sent me business (and continue to do so) when they probably could have kept it for themselves. They do so knowing that it would be better and more affordable for the Tron owner. So I think that makes them selfless assholes too. They are working on improving the parts that go into these old beasts so that they will last many more years. So that makes them dedicated assholes. More than once I have called John Bradley in the middle of the night desperate for some insight when in a last minute crunch. He's an accessible asshole, that one. They don't make very much money believe it or not, and they have poured much of what they have made into trying to bring entirely new trons to the market. I happen to know that Martin Smith is one frugal asshole. A few months back I had a conversation with Dave Keane. He's a nice enough guy. I've had several conversations with him over the years. In the most recent one, he told me that he doesn't really care to be involved with the day to day operation of Mellotron Archives: it is mostly in Markus Resch's capable hands. Years ago he put a lot of himself into it but that time has passed. I know Markus. He is a great guy as well. He has also been very supportive of me and was of immense help preparing some of the tapes I needed for Anglagard's NEARfest show last year. He also is dedicated and builds a very nice Mark VI. My suggestion to all is to think! We Tron lovers need all the help we can get. Mellotrons were made by John Bradley's father and uncles. Were it not for them this list would not exist. There is bad blood between the fellows at Streetly and Dave Keane. What is behind it is most likely unknown to most of you on this list. Leave them to their feelings and the freedom to express them, whether you agree or not. Be grateful that they are here for us. The bottom (so to speak) line is that to a substantial degree, these two assholes are going to determine the survival of the Mellotron. I have never heard one complaint about the quality of their work. I have never heard one complaint about the quality of their support. They may be assholes, but they're really nice assholes. And like their Mellotron work, if they decide being assholes serves a purpose, you can be sure that they will strive to be the very best assholes that they can be. Frank Stickle (loyal to the survival of the beloved beast)
