I'd prefer to leave the list completely open because I'm a firm
believer in open forums, but for spam reduction reasons I have had to
set things up so that posting is restricted to list members only.  

That means it's still possible for the sufficiently motivated spammer
to sign up for the list and then send out their spewage.  In practice
this happens once in a while and it's nothing to get excited over. 

(I just yanked the offending spammer off the list.)

It is possible to set things up so I would approve list memberships,
but I have neither the time nor desire for such a thing.

In the meantime, please understand that if you forward the complete
content of the spam in your message, you're doing just as much damage
as the spammer.  It really is best to just ignore any spam.
