New Mellotron Sounds

2002-11-17 by kenmerb@aol.com

Just thought I'd mention that there are some nice photos of Rick Blechta's
latest recording sessions for new Mellotron sounds on his web site. Check
them out at the following link:

http://rickblechta.com/Pages/Mellotron.html

These are the first photos I have ever seen of actual Mellotron sound
recording sessions.

There's even a photo of Rick playing the French horn, a sound which I proudly
own and play on my MKII. Although, the image scared me a little (it looks
like he's being strangled by a sea creature). I'm going to see this now
whenever I play that sound ;-).

Thanks, Rick, and I look forward to hearing the new sounds out on the
Streetly web site one of these days.

P'shaw. *I'M* looking forward to this.

If anyone has any of the less well-known sounds that are *not* featured
on the website (URL below) then can you please get in touch with me so I
can get some more samples up on the site?

But Mike, we prefer your little demos. When I installed the new sounds on my
MKII, there were no classic songs using these sounds ("Watcher" mix aside),
so I found myself playing the little Mike Dickson demos. Even now, whenever
I fire up the Ray Jung fretless bass, I have to do that bass run to make it
sound *official*.

Don't mind me, I'm easily impressed ;-).

But seriously, its not a coincidence that most of the new sounds I purchased
were the ones demo'd on your web site. I guess, more importantly, I didn't
purchase any sounds that I hadn't heard either on your web site or at
one of the Mellotron meetings. And since there are no more "Tronfests
planned, that pretty much leaves the web site. There were some other
interesting sounds (by name) available in the Library (ex. - E Bow, Electric
Violin), but without a demo to listen to, I couldn't tell if I would like
them or not.

So, (Martin?) if you want to sell the new sounds, the demos should be out
there (and to be fair, most of them are). Mikes demos are much more
effective at conveying the characteristics of the sounds than single notes
are (think Russian choir, for example). Now that Rick's well on the way to
providing some more new sounds, we'll need some demos out there for those
too. Not that *I'M* volunteering to do them though (sorry, Mike) ;-).

Good god. :-)

There's a mate of mine who came all the way down from Aberdeen to play
on my Mellotron. When I loaded up the I-McD flutes he started playing
something that I *vaguely recognised*. He told me that this was the
sample I had on Merb's website and that he had taken the time to learn
it!

It doesn't surprise me - I'd be loathe to buy set of tapes without any
idea of what they sounded like. (Although I confess I more or les did
this with the Russian Choir) Seriously; I again restate the begging
notice. If anyone has tapes that are *unusual* for which there are no
samples (or even entries) in the below-mentioned website then get in
touch with me.
