Actually - those are tron sounds with
synth/other samples mixed in. I had the chance to talk to him about it backstage
a couple of times.
But I agree that they are hard to discern as tron
sounds and don't really elicit the same feeling we've come to expect. I
also think that was his point - to combine both new and old sounds
for a different approach. Our discussion came as a result of my
sampling the sounds from his old double tron which contained what he maintains
are standard/custom sounds.
I guess whether this new tron sample/synth/other sample combination is an
improvement or not is up to the personal tastes of the listener. For me in some
instances it was better, but in others I found I really missed that warm and
lush atmosphere, like the lone flute in Heart of the Sunrise which sounded
more like a high pitched square wave. It all depended on the piece of music
they were playing and the volume level certain parts were played at.

I was somewhat disappointed though that Wakeman didn't use Mellotron sounds.
I wouldn't have expected to see a real Tron on stage but at least he could
have used a sampler to play the original sounds. Instead he used synthesized
sounds that were close, but only close, to Tron sounds. To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to:
