yes tour

2003-07-09 by Michael Peters

I saw Yes yesterday night in Bonn/Germany. With Rick Wakeman at the
keyboards, they played mostly the classic tunes. They were in great form - a
fun concert.

I was somewhat disappointed though that Wakeman didn't use Mellotron sounds.
I wouldn't have expected to see a real Tron on stage but at least he could
have used a sampler to play the original sounds. Instead he used synthesized
sounds that were close, but only close, to Tron sounds. To me, the Mellotron
strings are an integral part of the magic of the classic Yes material. Rick
Wakeman doesn't seem to feel the same way. Oh well.

Now I'm looking forward to see the Musical Box who'll come to Germany in
October.

I saw Yes last week in the Hammersmith Odean (London)
and Wakeman was the worst thing there.

I mean I can cope with Jon Anderson dicking about between
songs like an overweight Keith Chegwin,
or Chris Squire punching the air like someone's dad
pretending to be a rock star,
but Rick Wakeman murdering all the keyboard part using crap
digital preset sounds was more of a No than a Yes,
frankly..

How do you know that they were presets (by which, I assume, you mean
factory programmed patches)?

How do you know that Rick didn't programme the sounds himself?

How do you know that they were all generated digitally?

Why am I bothering to send this?

Why did I resubscribe to this forum?

Oh yes... and ... correct me, but doesn't a Mellotron doesn't play
preset sounds???

yeah, Rick didn't use any samples in the West Palm Beach show, either. Wakeman is bringing his solo tour to town on 18:Oct, and I'm going. I'll write up a review.

Why give the guy a hard time? Rick's keyboard sounds were (largely) crap,
although he was the star of the show. You know there's plenty of us who
aren't over-keen on the majority of modern
digital/sample-based/pseudo-analogue keyboard sounds - that's why we own
Mellotrons.

Hello again,

Andy asked:

>Why give the guy a hard time?

I didn't mean to. Well, not seriously. The problem with emails is that
they never quite read back the way that they were written. The tongue in
the cheek is rarely visible.

Then charel196 wrote...

>By the way,I highly
>recommend Gordon Reid's ALIENS CD(nice one Gordon)

... to which I say "that's really nice, thanks", and start to feel even
more guilty if I have upset anyone.

Finally, David wrote...

>Rick Wakeman has to make do with using
>a Yamaha EMT10 live on stage is cos you have hoarded
>all the good analogue synths in the country

... and I realise that I am well and truly hoist by own petard. Up until
this point, I didn't even know that I had a petard. I will have it
cleaned and put back in the wardrobe as soon as I get home.

Best to all,

Gordon.

You missed your anger management therapy session?

Hello Fritz,

>You missed your anger management therapy session?

None needed. As I noted in a post a few days ago, tongues in cheeks do
not transmit well over the net.

Gordon.

Actually - those are tron sounds with synth/other samples mixed in. I had the chance to talk to him about it backstage a couple of times.
But I agree that they are hard to discern as tron sounds and don't really elicit the same feeling we've come to expect. I also think that was his point - to combine both new and old sounds for a different approach. Our discussion came as a result of my sampling the sounds from his old double tron which contained what he maintains are standard/custom sounds.
I guess whether this new tron sample/synth/other sample combination is an improvement or not is up to the personal tastes of the listener. For me in some instances it was better, but in others I found I really missed that warm and lush atmosphere, like the lone flute in Heart of the Sunrise which sounded more like a high pitched square wave. It all depended on the piece of music they were playing and the volume level certain parts were played at.
