has anyone ever attached handles to the ends of a 400, or machined some
picky-uppy slots (such as one might find in the back of a wooden chair) into
the ends? some decent handles might've been the saving of a few 400's.

The ex-BJH machine has proper picky-uppy slots in the rear in the same place that my EMI machine had air vents. There are additional wooden surrounds inside and out to strengthen the arrangement and make it more comfy to hold. This makes lifting it easier which is a good thing as this one seems to be a fair bit heavier than a standard M400.
