Fuel Cell

Fuel Cell

2002-05-07 by dbarton62

Hey gang,
Just got my fuel cell back from getting cleaned and leak checked
.........either side of the filler neck there is a male .125-27 npt
fitting ..........I assume one is for line feed and the other is for
venting........neither of the ports extends deep enough into the tank
to act as a pickup .......is this correct? If so is there that much
suction in the line to pull the fuel through even at low fuel levels.?
  Cheers Dave #5577

Hi Dave,
The fuel tank in my car has the same arrangement as you describe. One side is plugged and the other side (right side) is the fuel pick-up. The fuel pickup has an elbow fitting with a brass tube soldered/brazed to the threaded end that reaches down into the tank almost to the bottom. My car seems to be vented through the filler cap. Is this correct? Jac Myers, do you know for certain? I certainly have had no problems with the fuel being drawn out of the tank so the tank has created a vent somewhere if not through the filler cap.

Re: [MarcosManiacs] Fuel Cell

2002-05-08 by Jack Myers

Hello Mike - Dave- Maniacs
In the top right of the cell there is a bulk head fitting screwed 1/4" BSP, through this passes a tube 7 3/4" long soldered/brazed to a 1/4"BSP M/M nipple. When this is secured in place the tube is 1/8" - 3/16" from the bottom of the cell. You will note that the back of the cell has a trough approximately 1"" deep by 2" wide running along the width of the cell, the dipper goes right down into this ensuring all the petrol can be picked up, the 1/8" - 3/16" gap allowing for any sediment to settle. I add that some later cells had a left side pick up which was soldered into the top of the cell, and the trough actually came down to a point. To the best of my knowledge all cells / petrol tanks on GTs vent through the filler cap.
The two point pick up would suggest an alternative, right / left, but as the fuel line exits the boot / trunk in the middle back board, there doesn't appear to be any point, perhaps the manufacturer got bored and tried a little variety.
I trust that I have done my duty and that this is of some help.

Hello Mike,Jack and gang,
Thanks for the info........the Webers I am told require high
volume and low pressure fuel supply........to achieve this ,seeing as
the outlets on the tank are so small, could I run both outlets into
a "Y" and then run .375 tubing to the electric pump and on to the
motor.......speaking of which I hope to marry the trans and motor
together this weekend and drop into the frame for the last time.......
pictures to follow.

Hi Dave,
I don't remember exactly what engine/carb combination you have but I have two 45 DCOE Webers feeding a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder Volvo engine with headers, cam and all the "go fast" stuff. I pull all the gas from one side (port) and run a low pressure Holley electric pump (blocked off the mechanical pump) and a pressure regulator with a fuel psi gage attached. I run the pressure at 3 psi maximum and have never had a problem. I use 5/16 fuel line everywhere (including the fitting and the pickup tube on the tank as I recall). Running a "y" configuration could cause you problems if you are cornering hard around a long curve with low fuel in that one side could "un-port" allowing the fuel pump to suck air.

Thanks Mike,
I see what you mean about the possible starvation problem......
it is probably best to use just one port and increase the pipe
diameter...........incidentally I am running 4 dual 38 IDF Webers on
a 3.5 litre Rover with all the goodies also.

Hey guys,

I'm running triple Solex 45s (essentially Weber 45 DCOEs) on my Volvo 3
litre, also with all the go-fast goodies, with the standard fuel line and
mechanical pump. I've never had a problem providing sufficient fuel to the
carbs, even at full bore, which I do more than I probably should. But what
the hey, a guy's gotta have fun.

Regards,

Paul Dransfield
