Hi Chris. Ya, it's me, and I still own and drive it all the time. I do have the engine apart to try to figure out why that thing runs so hot all the time. Hoping to finally solve that problem, shaving the block and head flat. I have tried everything else to no avail.
Phil.

Nice people, an in family car since new, now in the hands of the children, and they don't want it. This is the best I recall from the conversation. Phil 1970 Marcos.

Phil,When you had the water pump off, did you check the impeller on the shaft to be sure that it has not or does not come loose on the shaft when it warms up? I had a problem like that many years ago and found that a\the plastic impeller would expand when it got hot and would not move the water through. It was a after market pump as the original one had an iron impeller. it was hard to test on the bench, so i would run it hot, then carefully and quickly drain the water and remove and test the pump. I would place the pump in the hot water and then turn the shaft and hold the impeller. It took about 30 foot pounds to move it, but that was the problem. Regards, Larry

HI. THE CAR ALWAYS RAN ON THE HOT SIDE BUT WAS MANAGABLE. ON THE HIGHWAY FINE, GET INTO A 15 MINUTE SLOW DOWN WOULD RUN HOT, GET HELD UP 30 MINUTES HAD TO SHUT IT OFF BOILING OVER. LET IT COOL THEN GO. GOT TO THE POINT IT COULD ONLY BE RUN IN 60 DEG. WEATHER OR COOLER. MY SPRING, FALL, WINTER CAR. AT THE END IT COULDN'T EVEN GO 10 MILES DOWN THE ROAD, AND OVER HEAT. RADIATOR RE-CORED, ELECTRIC FAN ADDED, T STATS CHANGED,(DIFFERENT TEMPS) NOT AIR BOUND, HEATER CORE BY PASSED. STILL TO NO AVAIL. COMPRESSION GREAT, LEAK TESTED, TIMING CHANGED AND PLAYED WITH, NO WATER OIL MIX, AND NO STEAM OR WHITE TAIL PIPE. DIDN'T REALLY WANT TO WITH ALL MY OTHER PROJECTS, BUT I PULLED THE HEAD. I WAS HOPING TO FIND A MUDDED UP BLOCKAGE IN THE BLOCK, BUT NO LUCK THERE. DRAINED AND PERFECTLY CLEAN. NO WATER TRACKS BETWEEN THE HEAD AND THE BLOCK EITHER. HEAD GASKET IN GOOD SHAPE, NO SIGNS OF LEAKAGE ANY WHERE. PULLED THE WATER PUMP LOOKING FOR BROKEN VEIN ON THAT OK. I HAD THE HEAD SHAVED, AND MULLING OVER SHAVING THE BLOCK. STRAIGHT EDGE AND FEELERS SHOW IT'S OK. I HAVE SERVICED MY AND CUSTOMERS VEHICLES FOR 40 YEARS AND I AM BAFFLED. IT HAS ALSO BEEN RUN BY MANY OF LOCAL PRO'S, FRIENDS, FOR ADVICE. WILL BE REASSEMBLING NEXT MONTH FOR THE SUMMER. WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. ANY OTHER IDEAS OR OPPINIONS IS WELCOME. THANKS PHIL.

I vintage race a 1966 Marcos out here on the west coast. The old style Volvo water pump with a cast steel impeller pumps at least 2 times more water at the same RPM as a new stamped steel water pump did during the tests I did recently. Equally bad, the stamped impeller water pumps come with a variety of gaskets that are usually thicker than the OEM pump gaskets which makes the pumps even more inefficient. Unable to get new water pumps with a cast steel impeller, I have been running a rebuilt OEM water pump. Iroll motors in Morgan Hill California now has new water pumps made in Italy that have the cast impellers. I bought one but haven’t had a chance to test it. The Original Marcos radiator is marginal for the street even if it has been recored with more rows of tubes. I was running a 2.4 liter (bored and stroked Volvo engine on the street that was putting out 150 hp at the rear wheels. I cured the over heating problem with an aluminum radiator, electric puller fan, and a fan shroud. When I started vintage racing I had to remove the 2.4 liter engine and install a stock displacement 1.8 liter engine The new smaller engine produces more horsepower than the old stroker engine (but less torque and I rev it a lot higher) (shift at 7200 and red line at 8000) to get the power. This smaller engine produces between 160 and 170 hp at the rear wheels so it is really working hard, is highly stressed and produces a lot of heat. I have been working on the cooling issues for 4 years and still don’t have all the answers. However, I am getting closer to a solution and know a lot of things that don’t work. If you want to talk to me about your cooling issues you can reach me at 831 345-3955.

More thoughts....I am sure that you have checked the water flow with the cap off (when first starting the engine and cold) to see how fast the the water is moving through the expansion tank, to see if there might be a restriction in the return line from the radiator after the engine warms up.If you notice a slower than normal flow, let me know. There is a possible fix. Regards, Larry

Regards,
Larry

Phil,By running hot, do you mean that the temperature gage reads 'hot' , or is it boiling over.

Hi Chris. Ya, it's me, and I still own and drive it all the time. I do have the engine apart to try to figure out why that thing runs so hot all the time. Hoping to finally solve that problem, shaving the block and head flat. I have tried everything else to no avail.
Phil.

Hi. I saw this Marcos at the Limerock Vintage Fall Festival in 2014. It is virtually a perfect car. I checked it out closely, it is very nice. At the time they were showing it, but not sure they were ready to sell it. They drove it to the track, and I was present when they left, it sounded and ran good. Nice people, an in family car since new, now in the hands of the children, and they don't want it. This is the best I recall from the conversation. Phil 1970 Marcos.

are you using a restricted ..thermostat....in racing we use different sized ,,thermostats...ie the pass through holes are smaller than standard...this keeps the ...water./50-50 etc in the engine longer helping to cool the cast iron block

Larry

IT IS A METAL IMPELLAR, OEM VOLVO WATER PUMP, PERHAPS THE ORIGINAL. I HAVE NEVER REPLACED IT. SOLID ON THE SHAFT, NO BROKEN VEINS OR WOBBLY BEARING ISSUES. DID BUY A NEW ONE TO REPLACE IT WHILE IT'S OUT. IM CHANGING OUT EVERYTHING, THAT IS EASY TO GET TO. PHIL.
