wire wheel sizes

wire wheel sizes

2016-03-10 by steinpom@...

I'm going to be getting new wheels for my wood hulled 1600 GT. It currently has 13" Dunlops with bias ply tires on it from the time before I bought the car about 35 years ago. Its nearing the end of a loooooooong restoration and I'd like to know people's opinion about whether to source new 13" wires or switch to 14" low profile. Also does anyone have a suggestion for sourcing good wire wheels at a reasonable price including if necessary shipping to the west coast of Canada.

Thanks for any guidance.

Hi Danny,
I think the 13" wheels look better, as they look more classic than the 14", which seem too big to me - but then, I never liked low profile tyres. Mine are 13X5 1/2 inch, although 13 X 4 1/2 might be better, as my wheels have a bit too much offset, which poses problems with wheel clearance and geometry at the front. Have a look at MWS, which supplies rather affordable 13" wheels, or try Dayton wheels, which can make you a set of wheels with the proper offset, even with a 5 1/2 inch rim. See for an example of MWS 13 X 5 1/2": https://www.flickr.com/photos/ocmerb/sets/72157627501833285/

Re: [MarcosManiacs] wire wheel sizes

2016-03-10 by larry meadows

Danny,Because 13" tyres are almost unavailable, except from Taiwan or China, I would recommend a 14" wheel like the MINI LITE'S. There is a 13" from Holland, I beleive, that has a larger roll radius, however, the rear wheel arch has ti be cut out to the rear about 3/4" to give tyre clearance. I did this on a steel chassis 1970 Marcos awhile back, and it gave the car better road handling. They ran about 170.00 each including shipping. The conversion to wire requires spindle changes.

Larry

Re: [MarcosManiacs] wire wheel sizes

2016-03-10 by Remco Bruins

Hi Danny,
I use Uniroyal Rallye 380 175 R13 86T tyres, which are probably the tyres Larry refers to as the tyres from Holland. On my car they didn't require the rear wheel arch to be cut out, as far as I know they're regular sized. I could measure the roll radius to be sure. However, I don't know whether these are available in the States. Here in the Netherlands, it's the 14" tyres which are more difficult to acquire.
regards,
Remco

Danny,Because 13" tyres are almost unavailable, except from Taiwan or China, I would recommend a 14" wheel like the MINI LITE'S. There is a 13" from Holland, I beleive, that has a larger roll radius, however, the rear wheel arch has ti be cut out to the rear about 3/4" to give tyre clearance. I did this on a steel chassis 1970 Marcos awhile back, and it gave the car better road handling. They ran about 170.00 each including shipping. The conversion to wire requires spindle changes.

Danny

Attached is a photo of #5916 (steel frame with TR6 power, one of the 11 build). The car has 14in. Dayton’s (6.5in), the spindles were out of England. Dayton well build the wire wheels to your requirements, but they aren’t cheap. The car has Pirelli tires which have done a good job for street use.

Thanks

Stephen

Thanks Larry,

The car already has 13" 'Dunlop wire wheels, so no conversion is necessary. But they are worn, and should be replaced. I am concerned especially about front end clearance. There was evidence that the old style tires even with the 13" wheels were banging into the back of the headlight buckets. I've had the buckets modified to increase clearance. What do you think of Vredstein tires - they have a 13".

Danny,
Be careful about using low profile grippy tires with the wooden chassis as the additional torque could be translated into excess stress on the wood structure. I use a Yokohama 13" tire on my 13" x 5-1/2" wires.
Larry, Great article in Classic Motorsports. Are you up for the Mitty this year? I will be driving down from Maryland if weather permits.
Chris, I would love to come up to one of your New Jersey events soon to see your beautiful car. Let me know some details. As I have some trouble getting onto Yahoo from my office (crazy spam stuff), it's easier to reach me at:
dmensh@davisconstruction.com.

Thanks Larry, The car already has 13" 'Dunlop wire wheels, so no conversion is necessary. But they are worn, and should be replaced. I am concerned especially about front end clearance. There was evidence that the old style tires even with the 13" wheels were banging into the back of the headlight buckets. I've had the buckets modified to increase clearance. What do you think of Vredstein tires - they have a 13". Danny From: MarcosManiacs@yahoogroups.com [mailto:MarcosManiacs@yahoogroups.com]

I did this on a steel chassis 1970 Marcos awhile back, and it gave the car better road handling. They ran about 170.00 each including shipping. The conversion to wire requires spindle changes.

Its nearing the end of a loooooooong restoration and I'd like to know people's opinion about whether to source new 13" wires or switch to 14" low profile. Thanks for the advice of experience. Currently I'm inclined to use the 13" wires but not low profile tires. Any good sources for new Dunlop wires?
