Hi Danny
I don't have any pics as I'm in Aus and my car (1500gt 1966) is in the UK but hopefully this can be helpful as I rebuilt all suspension some years ago.
As a starter and I'm sure you know. Post 65 front suspension is triumph GT6. Wishbones also off of spitfire / herald and vitesse. Uprights are purely GT6/vitesse as calliper mounts are different than spitfire. Steering rack is GT6/Vitesse with a one inch space inserted to restrict full lock hitting the headlamp bowls. Critical if you have an original short bonnet.
Rear suspension consists of two identical vertical shock upper mounts which have from memory 4 bolt fixings into chassis with captives in the chassis to connect them to. I think the lowest bolt also holds the steel bar which goes across the car between both mounts.
Lower shock mounts bolt to modified ford cortina axle
Panhard rod has rose bush that slides onto axle stud on one side. Other side bolts to a horizontal steel mount which bolts with captive nuts into the lower boot area . This also has a bolt inside the axle tunnel to stop movement
The trailing arms have split half bushes to mount on the axle ( one arm is adjustable) and then small rubber donout bushes on top arm bolting through vertical wooden chassis panel at rear of car and larger do outs on the bottom arm. The holes in the wood often elongate and cause handling issues and are often badly repaired.
Not sure if this is any help. It's pretty easy and if you need bushes , Rory at marcos heritage in the UK has them. He also can supply mounts and trailing arms. I made my mounts out of stainless but stuck with steel arms and pan hard rod.
Hope this helps
Regards,
Andy

Peter, thanks once again. The front suspension is less of a mystery than the rear, but everything helps.

Hello Richard,
I would really appreciate some photos, especially of the panhard rod connections and the area around the rear shock mounts. I still have the old mounts which were slightly twisted when I took them off as they seem to have been made from a fairly light guage sheet metal with no gussets or other stiffeners. I had much heavier ones made up which I also still have. Speaking only from memory, I seem to recall that there was another bracket that was also mounted with one of the shock mount bolts and then an additional bolt. Does your car have this, or is my mind playing tricks. If its there what is it for? I was such an idiot for not taking photos – but I did anticipate the car being put back together right away at that time. Having now restored 2 other cars I now know these projects can be measured in decades unless tackled almost full-time.
Anyhow much gratitude for any help. Pictures of my car in pieces can be seen on marcosmaniacs.
Danny

I have not taken mine very far apart yet.
Rear suspension is still all original and intact.
Pics will be awkward but possible since it's in an attic.
Actually pretty simple, odd arrangement to the locating arms but it works fine until the mount s begin to auger out.
You will want to reinforce the attachments.
Loads of info on the wood chassis cars at the U.K. Marcos site, http://marcossportscarenthusiasts.yuku.com/
They are particularly fond of the wood cars.
There is a full restoration thread there with loads of excellent pictures.

Hello Peter,
Great to get such a quick response. My problem is that I took the car apart (it was complete when I got it) about 25 at least years ago.. like most people I did not anticipate so many years to pass before getting back to the project. I foolishly did not take many photos as it was coming apart. Then a young friend of my kids decided to do me a favour and tidy up the variou s piles of car parts I had in the basement and garage. What he did not realize was that parts were in various locations because they belonged to various cars I have. Hard to get mad at someone who’s trying to do a favour but…. Anyhow, time and the mixing up of parts has not ma! de the restoration any easier. I’m told that there never was an official factory build manual for this model, but I’m hoping someone has a lead on something. I have a number of TORQUE club magazines which have some info, but maybe one I don’t have would be more to the point. Enough ranting for tonight. Copies of any pictures you might still have of the 1600 mechanicals or suspension would be nice.

Hi Danny
No idea if this reaches you, but here we go. I owned a 67 wooden chassis and regret for ever selling it.
around 40 years after, I have now imported a steel chassis 3.9ltr around 80 model from GB. And it exhibits all the flaws I always knew about. Heavy as, with an engine that has not zip (albeit 3.9 ltr) and a feel like driving a tank. The wooden chasis GT1600 I owned was nimble as.
But as to details? I am now amazed at how little information is available about any of these cars. And I mean in detail: what is the rear axle, the front suspension, and so on. My earlier GT1600 had a Ford rear axle (a Ford 1660 engine and gear box and GT6, Herald or Spitfire front end stuff.
chers
Peter

After about 25 years of being apart I'm about to try and gather up all the parts and do a loose reassembly of the car to see if I still have all the pieces. The ca! r will then be taken apart again to finish the body restoration and get painted. The immediate need is for some detailed photos and/or diagrams of the rear suspension and associated brackets etc etc for a wood hulled 1600 GT. Any other manuals or instructions would be most appreciated. The only build manual I can find on the internet is for the later tube frame chassis. Were there significant changes to the suspension when the GT went from wood chassis to metal tube?
Thanks for the tips, advise and wisdom.
Danny
