1800 GT interior

1800 GT interior

2003-10-08 by Laurie Sellers

Does anyone have detailed photo's of the original 1800 GT upholstery
and dashboard components?.
The race prepared car I recently puchased (#4026) has had the
interior virtually stripped out, as is common practice for racing in
Europe to save weight.
I will need to restore some of the interior (with the help of an
upholsterer) to comply with the local Australian rules for racing in
Group S Production Sports Car Class. As a minimum I will need to
install a near replica of the seats. I am allowed install ready made
racing seats "of period type" but the width between the door sills
and centre tunnel makes it difficult to find anything that fits. So
it will probably be easier to get seat squabs and backrests custom
built in like the originals. Also, the dashboard would look much
nicer if closer to original, it has been removed completely and
replaced with a centre console housing a small cluster of
instruments and switches. I don't believe that either of these
changes would add much in the way of weight (which racers are
fanatical about...for good reason) but would add tremendously to the
appeal.
So if anyone has photo's, possibly taken during restoration
(preferably of the seating components outside of the car) or specs
or drawings or patterns (well you never know!) and similar for the
dashboard I would be most appreciative.
Thanks very much for your help.
Regards
Laurie #4026

I have restored 2 1970 Marcos' 3 litre Volvo and somewhere I have the patterns for the seats, door panels, carpet and complete dash assy. I think I have the mold for the "sting-ray" dadh top cover. I will look through my old boxes (from 2 moves) and try to find them. I am doing the carpet set for my car now so I can send you those patterns if you would like. I have a lot of restoration photos but my scanner is not working, so maybe I can copy them to plain paper and post them to you.

Larry
I would be most grateful for the seat patterns, but my preference
for the dash is definately 1800 GT with the centre console.
If you need to post anything to me, my address is:
3 Brolga Place, Belrose, NSW 2085, Australia.
I will of course reimburse you for the postage costs by return mail.
For information, I have added some pictures in my photo file (under
my name) which shows the current state of the interior. Apparently,
it is very common practice in Europe to strip the interior when
preparing cars for FIA racing.
I have had several phone conversations with Dave Methley in England
as he originally prepared the car, first put me on to it and
supported me with advice throughout the purchase. As I understand
it, Dave prepared and maintains most of the racing Marcos's in
Europe today.
It occurred to me that if he regularly strips the cars in
preparation for racing, then he might have a pile of interiors at
the back of his workshop.
Alas, he told me that they all went in the skip! (I nearly cried!).
He has apparently kept the best set, but does not want to part with
it.
The car is currently on a ship heading to Sydney and due to dock on
27th October, so I can't do anything productive until then.
My aim is to bring the dashboard and seating back to close to
original without adding much extra weight. I will not worry about
the rest of the interior as we are allowed to take the coverings off
the tunnel and floors etc under our rules anyway.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Best regards
Laurie

Though Dave Methley also prepared my 1800 for racing I was lucky that he left the dashboard in the car (or the former owner wanted it that way?). The seats though are gone since she have been racing for decades (so I am also looking for a set!) and instead there an old set of the narrow light racingtype fiberglass seats (no comfort at all).
Some meters might have been changed and some few switches might have been added on the dashboard else it Iooks original to me even it's quite used (after 38 years).
If you are interested I can take some photos of the dashboard and email to you (and to Don for the web)?

P.S. Laurie, you probably know that the distance between Australia and Denmark have become shorter, since Denmark are going to get a (very pretty) Australian crownprincess (Mary) next year? :)

My wife just updated me about Crownprincess Mary.
Whoops, sorry I had not been keeping up with the news on this!!.

Subject: [MarcosManiacs] 1800 GT interior

Regards

Hi Jac
Unfortunately, the pictures do not seem to be attached.
Where would I find them?.
Perhaps it would be best to upload them into a photo file.
Best regards

Hi Jac
Unfortunately, the pictures do not seem to be attached.
Where would I find them?.
Perhaps it would be best to upload them into a photo file.
Best regards

Hi Jac
Maybe I am using a different interface to you (Microsoft Internet
Explorer) but I cannot see a paperclip.
What I do get is two boxes at the bottom of the message which I
think are your pictures. But in both cases they say "attachment not
stored" and if I click on them, nothing happens.
Maybe the photo file is still the best option?.
Thanks again for taking the trouble to help.

Hi everyone,

I've just joined this list. It's nice to see there's a bit more traffic
than there is on the Marcos Mailing List (http://www.team.net).

You should treat the list more like a newsgroup and not post binaries
(which includes photos), html, etc. to it. Pictures can be put on the
yahoo photo galleries or on your own web space. The server won't forward
binaries to the list.

You'll find some photos the Marcos Euregio Meeting in September at
http://www.minimarcos.org.uk/shows/eureg03/ . If you were there and
have some different photos (particulalry of the 2nd and 3rd place
coupes) I'd be happy to include them. The same goes for any events with
Mini Marcos and Mini Jems taking part.

Richard

Hello Laurie
I have put the photo's in the Album section, the album is called squab.
Hope they are of some help. I will also scan in a picture of the centre console, striped ready for restoration.

Laurie,
I have just uploaded some dashboard photos to the photosection, - look under "Jan's 1800" or try the link below here.
I took about 40 photos in all. Average full size is about 850kb for every photo (those in the photosection are only about 65kb in full size). I can send you a CD with them all or resize them all to about 65kb and mail them to you, if you are interested?

Jan
My wife just updated me about Crownprincess Mary.
Whoops, sorry I had not been keeping up with the news on this!!.
Obviously I have been too pre-occupied with the Marcos!

Hallo Jan,

So you bought Stephen Minoprio's Marcos 1800! I wondered where it
was. Where are you living in Denmark?

Jac and Jan
Thank you so much for the pictures.
It makes it much easier now for me to see how the dash and centre
console were constructed. Hopefully, with the benefit of these
pictures, an interior trimmer will have little trouble in making
something close to the original look for me. It is still two weeks
before the car arrives in Sydney. As you can imagine, I am looking
forward to taking it out on the track for the first time. I will be
sure to let you all know my initial reactions, and when I start work
on the interior I will keep a photo record and put it into my photo
file in case you are interested.
You guys have all been fantastic.
Thanks again.
Laurie

Hello Andy,

I don´t think he bought "Stephen Minprio´s" Marcos because Stephen
was on the grid last weekend with his Marcos on the "Eifel-Klassik"
for the 300km on the Nürburgring. He was in 4 position behind the
Marcos from Alan Tice. But mid of the race he got mechanical problems
and could not finish.

Alan Tice was for long time in this race in the lead and lost first
place in the last lap to 5,4 ltr. Corvette. But second over all with
160 cars (Jag´s, TVR´s, Lotus,Alfa´s etc.) was a phantastic result.

Some pictures of the race and Stephen´s car as well you find on:

Hi Andy and Christian
Actually Minoprio had two 1800's. I bought his number two car last summer. A very fast gentleman by the way.
Andy, - if you know some history about my car, seen some older photos somewhere etc. I would be happy to know.
Didn't you also had an 1800?

Kære Jan,

So you live in Sjælland to the west of Roskilde! Now I know where
you are. I have never visited Holbæk, but I have friends in
København (Copenhagen) and I was often in Vedbæk to visit my NATO
team there during the last 2 years.

Yes, Stephen Minoprio owned two Marcos Volvo 1800s. The one you
bought, the blue car UK-registered FAY411C, was the car he had for
many years; his current Marcos FIA championship car is painted a
ruby red-purple colour (a race car should be easily visible on the
track!).

I believe Stephen drove your car in many HSCC Roadsports Class races
in the UK. It is not as extensively modified as many current FIA
cars in the GTS Class -- no lightweight body in thinner fiberglass,
highly tweaked motor and all unecessary weight removed, etc. -- and
in this I think you are lucky. Your car is largely original, I
believe, and this is becoming something of a rare thing for the
Marcos Volvo race cars. I'm certain you will enjoy it, and there
should be some nice roads in your area along the seacoast to enjoy
it during the summer.

Unfortunately I do not know more about the history of your car, but
Stephen certainly will. All that I know of it comes from talking to
Stephen about this car when it was advertised for sale a few years
ago.

I have never owned a Marcos 1800, but I wish I had one!

Andy

Hej Andy
Thanks for your short stories about the Minoprio cars. Some day I will dive a little deaper and try to contact some of the pre-owners of my 1800 (before Minoprio), I have a few names, - time will show.
With your Danish language and city location talent you are welcome to drop by for a garage inspection if you get in my area again, - but better wait to after next Summer as I am building house at the moment and my garage is all caos, - and those things take time (and stealing my garage time :)
