Damage: SUV=$0, Marcos= $1965

2003-09-09 by Don Lattimer

Yep, it happened. At a stop sign, the SUV in front of me (first in line)
for some reason decided to back up. Trailer hitch ball just did wonders to
the front.............

Good news: Driver had license and insurance. No frame damage. Get whole
bonnet fixed and repainted on his dime.

Bad news: Off the road for repairs. Ruined vacation...........

Observations: SUV drivers cannot hear air horns!

Nothing more to say. I'll be at Palo Alto but without Marcos :-(

Don
Sorry about the SUV, steel trailer hitch vs. fiberglass, is not good for the glass! The good news is that glass can be fixed to better than new.
Hope to see you in Palo Alto, even though the drive down for you can not be as much fun!!
Thanks

Hi Don,

A similar thing happened to me years ago. I parked at the front of a line of
cars close to an intersection and there was no space in front of me for
anyone else to park legally. Someone obviously thought otherwise because
when I returned to my car there was a 5 or 6 inch scrape up the centre of
the bonnet deep into the fibreglass, probably caused by one of those older
chrome bumpers. The guy took off and I was left to repair it myself. The
problem was, I didn't have enough paint to redo the whole bonnet so the
repaired area is still noticeable up close.

You were fortunate to have the other guy's insurance pick up the tab. Some
dishonourable guys might even have claimed that you drove into them.

Regards,

Hi Don- Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I suspect we have twin
cars. Peter, the owner of the car which I prepare, had the misfortune
of falling asleep at the wheel of the tow vehicle while travelling to
the new Gosfoth Park raceway here in South Africa.(2400Km round trip)

Fortunately they escaped without injury and the new hitch I had just
fitted took the pain and bent rather than tossing the Marcos. We
survived with just superficial bodywork damage to the Marcos but
R17000 damage to the tow vehicle.

More superficial damage was inflicted at the races and we have had a
clutch collapse. (pressure plate drive links) but other than that all
is well.

By the way it is possible to remove a 5-speed Sierra gearbox without
removing the motor. Just remove the drive-shaft/ bellhousing
bolts/gearbox mtg. and shift the gearbox backwards. Then separate the
gearbox from the bellhousing and remove the bits.

New uprated clutch fitted and looking forward to the next races.

Cheers

JV

JV,
Nobody has been hurt so that's good!
Where did you find the bellhousing to adapt the Sierra gearbox to the Essex V6 ?? Those babies are rare!
