Door waist seal

Door waist seal

2003-04-14 by Don Lattimer

I finally tackled the door window seal replacement. It's the one
that is on the outside of the door glass that is almost impossible
to change without 3 hands(or one arm that's REAL long).

The seal that fit is from the Triumph Spitfire. About 4 inches have
to be removed from each end and then the metal strip that the rubber
is bonded to has to be slit so that the seal will conform to the
curve of the frame. Not too bad looking after install. Just take
your time and keep testing the fit as you trim it.

Good tip Don
Just got the shell back from the upholsterer......will be
tackling the reassembly in the next few weeks........by the way I
have finally figured out my digital camera or at least my 12 year
daughter did , so I will post some decent pics soon.

Dave,
What year is your Rover engine? Size? Where did you get it? Injection/carburetion, etc.?? Gearbox?
Just preparing for some time in the future. My Essex V6 is of the older style and parts are hard to come by. Hopefully it will last a while, but putting on 10k + miles/year is inviting a rebuild or a new engine some day.
Thanks,

Re: Door waist seal

2003-04-15 by Dave Barton

Hi Don
That is a long story so I will give the abbreviated version.......
the casting #'s on the block and heads are nowhere to be found in any
Rover records.........the block is definitely a Rover casting
as"ROVER" is cast into the face of the block under the timing
cover.......so............I can only assume that it is a
preproduction block and heads that was scooped up by Marcos......
the trans is a 4spd....I am told that it is a heavy duty unit that
was commonly used for use in things like Italian police cars etc.
  The displacement is 3.5 litre (.060 oversize)........the
carburetion is 4 dual IDF Webers with 40MM chokes......the engine as
far as I can gather from the info I have researched came from the
factory in this car......although the build sheet says that it was a
V4........the previous owner was a collector of out of the ordinary
cars (Fiat Abarth twin cams etc)....so although I have yet to confirm
that it was a factory V8 install ,there are lots of clues leading to
that assumption........Marcos will not tell me!
Fitting the V8 is not too difficult but you do need to cut the foot
boxes.........I'm sure you have seen the pics but if you have'nt look
in "V8 Marcos" file

Hi Dave,

You mentioned that you were going to the Ancaster British car show, which is
this Sunday, and I thought I'd let you know that I'll be there from around
9:30am to 11-ish. It's Easter Sunday and my wife's family always make a big
thing about getting together so I gotta be there too. Hope to see you on
Sunday.

Paul . . .
I just got the Mantis out of winter storage this afternoon. It fired up and ran beautifully! I guess it's the 80 degree weather we're having today.
I'll look for you at Ancaster on Sunday. That is, provided that the snow predicted for the next day or so is gone before then!

RE: [MarcosManiacs] Re: Door waist seal

2003-04-16 by pauldransfield@iname.com

Hi Dave,

Yes, I'll have the Marcos at the show. I rebuilt my triple carbs over the
winter and got everything back together last weekend after waiting weeks for
the snow to melt around my way. I don't really understand why but there is a
very noticeable improvement in performance. The service kits mainly
consisted of gaskets and needle valves, but the car definitely has a lot
more oomph. I'm really looking forward to the outing.

You probably saw Ron McLeod's note, so look out for a light blue Mantis and
a Porsche tangerine coupe. See you on Sunday.

Hi Paul
I thought Ron was joking about the weather but it doesn't look good
right now..........how do you find the Webers for tuning, I just put
triples on my TVR ,I haven't road tested yet but expect to have to
fiddle with it a bit

Dave . . .
This weather is no laughing matter! However, forecast for Sunday is 18C (65F), with 60% chance of rain. I'm planning to take the Mantis to Ancaster as long as this forecast holds.

Hi Paul
I thought Ron was joking about the weather but it doesn't look good
right now..........how do you find the Webers for tuning, I just put
triples on my TVR ,I haven't road tested yet but expect to have to
fiddle with it a bit
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,

The forecast for the weekend has temperatures in the high 50s so I wouldn't
worry.

My carbs are Solex 45s, which are similar to Webers. I'm not sure if your
question on tuning refers to jetting or balancing. However, I had extensive
correspondence back in the early 80s with Andre (don't immediately recall
his last name) in Sweden who had done A LOT of tuning on his 3 litre Volvo,
to the extent of boring it out and changing the crankshaft profile,
resulting in 3.6 litres. He also used Solex carbs so he sent me a number of
recommendations for the jets and choke tubes for them. When I checked, my
carbs conformed to one of his recommendations, which was fortunate because
Solex parts are very hard to come by. It would appear that the rebuild kits
are only available through a few places in England. I've been told that
Weber jets would fit in a pinch, but it hasn't been necessary to check that
out.

Balancing them is a bit tricky, but it helps to have an airflow meter which
I use to equalize the three carbs. I then use a colourtune kit to balance
the mixture at each choke. That part is a bit tricky because if I follow the
colourtuune instructions exactly, the mixture ends up being too rich. I
found that out when I took a run up the highway following a tuning session
and then pulled a plug to see the result. I believe the colour of the plug
is a truer indicator so I leaned out the mixture until the plug colour was
correct. I need to repeat the exercise now I've rebuilt the carbs because
the idling speed went up quite a bit. That might be because the middle carb
had screw plugs missing from both choke tubes. The holes were underneath
between the choke tube and the butterfly, and I haven't a clue how long the
plugs were missing. Fortunately I'd kept an old set of idle screws I'd
replaced 15 years ago which had the same thread size. I just shortened them
and they fit perfectly.

I hope that helps answer your question. If you need more details, I'll be
happy to oblige on Sunday. I guess you'll be driving a TVR. See you then.

Regards,
        Paul
