Gearbox removal

Gearbox removal

2002-12-15 by Don Lattimer <donlattimer@pacific.net>

Well, I got to do it..... Seems that the gearbox refuses to repair
itself, so I must remove it.

So....I need some expert advice.

1. Can the gearbox on a V6 steel frame be removed without removing
the engine (i.e. lowered from the car)?

2. If it can, is it easier to remove engine/gearbox as a unit
instead?

3. Can the engine/gearbox be removed as a single unit or do they
need to be separated?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Also just posted some pics of mine to www.britishcarforum.com

Hi Don,

Although I've never tried to do it ALL the references say remove box
and engine together (and all the articles I've seen in club magazines
say this is how they did it).

I'm fairly sure there's a chassis rail under the rear of the box
which would make it nearly (if not completely) impossible to drop the
box down under the car.

Best of luck.

Mark

Hi all,

My prayers have been answered. Phil Ward just called me from the UK
to advise that the gearbox CAN be removed without removing the
engine. The gearbox is separated from the bellhousing and the
bellhousing is left attached to the engine. Voila! As long as you
don't engage the clutch while the gearbox is out, things should be
OK. Phil was very knowledgeable about the engine/gearbox. His car
is #3m5745 (15 before mine).

The clutch and pressure plate are only 15K miles old so I'll take my
chances.

Phil also gave me some tips on what layshaft, gear ratios, etc. that
can be installed. The Capri gearbox innards work in this box. The
Capri gearbox has steel selectors where as the current selectors are
bronze. Lots of good info!

If you read this Phil, thank you very much!
