is the battery actually a concern?

is the battery actually a concern?

2005-06-02 by Mark Daborn

Hi,
I'm due to take possesion of an SX-210 any day now and i'm beginning to suspect that one of the first things i should do is check and replace the old battery.
I feel i have the ability to do this, but what are the specifications of the battery i will need to replace? For the sake of simplicity, i think i will swap it for another nicad. If i just remove it alltogether and not replace it, apart from not retaining memory when switched off, will there be any other effect?
Looking forward to finally getting my hands on it though!!

It should be a concern, open up the one you consider buying and check
for leakage and functionality. You can replace it with another NiCD
of the same specification (it's quite standard).

However, Iit's better to replace it with a Lithium one, AFAIK there
should only be a resistor to be replaced with a diode in order to do
so, but I'm still verifying it.

The battery is a huge concern, especially if its the original 20 yr old NiCd. They start to leak a *very * corrosive gas (you can't see it) that destroys traces on the board. Once the corrosion starts, its difficult to stop it. I don't recommend replacing it with a new NiCd unless you want to inspect it once a year for leakage. I would use a AA size 3.6v lithium batt with a diode in series so the charging circuit won't attempt to charge the lithium batt. Removing a resistor is not needed. Since you have to hard wire the battery anyway, just put the diode in series with the "+" battery lead.

If you're not certain how to do this, have a tech install it for you. Its a very simple mod and would not cost much to have done.

I can send someone a pic of how I did this to post if you want.

What is the resistor connected to the battery for ?

I know the conversion procedure for the Polysix includes actually
removing (replaceing) the resistor with the diode...

I have the service manual for the 240, but not the 210. If I had the s. manual for the 210 and knew which resistor you were referring to I could tell you. In my estimation, it is more than likely there to limit charging current to the battery....so if you disable the charging with a diode, it won't matter if its there or jumped out of the circuit. I suppose if it is there to limit current, you could replace it with a diode disabling charging. Doesn't matter how you do it, just be sure to do it correctly so you don't risk damaging the unit.

I uploaded the schematics section of the SX210 battery to the Files
section in case you'd like to look at it.
