Just another update. Opened it up and took the battery out, no damage to the PCB that I could see. The lowest G and A keys were sticking when I turned the synth on but I fixed that by taking the keys off and cleaning the rubber contacts. Now all I need to do is get a new battery and install it. Until then I am writing down my patches. Spent all night programming the SX-240, it is quite a beast and responds well to programming! Thanks for your help and comments. -JB --- In kawai-teisco@yahoogroups.com, "jimmyb00ts" <jimmyb00ts@...> wrote: > > Thanks so much for your info, greatly appreciated! I am thinking about opening the synth tonight and clipping the old battery out, since I can use it without a battery and since the stock battery is a ticking time bomb. Then later on in the week, I will install a new lithium battery (CR2032.) > > When I open the synth tonight, is there anything I should be aware of? The service manual does not provide instructions for opening the synth and I know from my Opus III and Prodigy that great care must be taken when opening one of these beasts. > > Also, do you know the type of CR2032 I should get? > > I am considering using this battery holder:http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3060977 > > And this battery: Enercell® 3V/225mAh CR2032 Lithium Coin Cell Battery. Is that a good battery to use? I also have already found the necessary diodes. > > Thanks so much for your assistance, it is greatly appreciated! > > All the best, > JB > > --- In kawai-teisco@yahoogroups.com, "kb_cheapmods" <kerrybradley@> wrote: > > > > Mine had similar problems when I got it. > > > > It still had the old battery so I clipped that out first. Then inspection around the battery area revealed darkened discolored PCB traces. I took my ohmmeter and did continuity checking on them. I found that, while the traces didn't LOOK open, some of them actually were. I found two that were open, so I used jumper wires to bypass those open traces. That fixed the synth. > > > > I then replaced the old battery with a CR2032 holder and diode in series so that I could reload and have saved patches. I have all the settings for my presets written down. All the memory locations default to the "Basic SX240" settings. You can replace the nicad battery with a standard CR2032 Lithium battery with a diode in place so the lithium battery does not receive a charge from the synth charging circuit. The battery would explode without a diode in place. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > --- In kawai-teisco@yahoogroups.com, "jimmyb00ts" <jimmyb00ts@> wrote: > > > > > > > > > > Hello all, I searched the archives so apologies if these subjects have been definitively responded to. > > > > > > > > > > Can I use this synth without a battery (in other words, if I desolder the internal original NiCAD battery, will the synth work as normal, save for the inability to save presets?) > > > > > > > > > > My SX-240, which I just received, is in near-mint condition cosmetically; however when I turn it on, four consecutive notes in the lower half of the keyboard are constantly droning.
