1oz vs 1/2 oz

1oz vs 1/2 oz

2010-09-05 by Steve Maroney

Dear Gang

Do you guys prefer 1oz copper clad over 1/2 oz ? My initial thoughts
is the at 1oz is sturdier and can tolerate heat better than 1/2 ?!?
Please share you experiences. Thanks.

Best Regards,

But the 1/2oz is better for etching thin traces!

18u etches faster than 35u, less time, less undercutting.

I use mostly 18u simply because it is the material used by the pro
board houses (which they then plate up to 35u), and I got it cheap as
cutoffs.

Etching takes a lot longer.

I use 1-oz when I want to run higher-power stuff (recently, some LED drivers) but apart from that I typically use 0.5-oz.

The time for me isn't an issue (as Leon mentioned) though because I mill, I don't etch. I just tell the software "this is a 1-oz board" and it worries about the rest :)
