Hi There George,
That's some good advice from WT. If you unplug the mains connector (they're not that well protected inside) you can easily take off the right (from the front) cheek side panel and examine drive 1. Assuming the same thing is wrong with both, looking at the top of the drive while you slide a (spare) floppy into it should reveal what's going on exactly. If that's easy to fix the other is slightly harder as you have to unscrew and slide the right side drive out to get to the other. Those screws are top and bottom, so best to put the CMI up on its far end, then remove the floor and ceiling covers. They're all phillips head.
At this juncture you can also get the part number for the drive (there were about 2 styles in the IIx) and maybe post a photo, if you can't work out what the trouble is.
The real challenge from memory is that the drives are a bit heavy if you're used to 3.5", and it's all right next to the mains switch, which might or might not be insulated, so you should definitely unplug it from the wall before touching anything inside.
Good Luck,
Joe

Hello,
Just wanted to briefly introduce myself. I'm a new proud CMI IIx owner. :-) I just had a moment to set it up for the first time since I picked it up last Saturday and I already encountered the first problem:
The floppy disks won't go in all the way, they insert about half way or so and then something blocks them. When I peeked inside it seems that those white round plasticky things are in the way or something. The seller had mentioned that he had to oil the drives in the past. Could it be that those things are supposed to snap back and aren't? Is there a trick and/or a way to fix that? They were working just fine at the sellers house when he demo'ed it. But he had the mainframe laying sideways on the woodrails (the proper way I take it). When I brought it to my studio I had to set it upright like a pc-tower due to lack of space. Is it ok to setup a CMI like that and could that affect the floppies?
Thanks.
George
