CMI IIX "Old Strings" factory sound?

CMI IIX "Old Strings" factory sound?

2010-03-14 by tomulcahy

This sound:
http://www.madtheory.com/Old%20Strings.mp3
Appears in music by Jarre, AON, U2, Oldfield, The The and Kieth Emerson. But it does not appear on any of the IIx factory discs, as far as I can ascertain.

Does anyone know where this sound came from? The version I have there is from JJ's "Art of Sampling" disc, and it does not seem to be the original, because it has a bell sound in the attack.

I've also been looking for that sound in the IIx library.
I've got the following 3 string floppies, none of them which contain that sound:

#14 LOSTRING
#15 HISTRING
#16 STRINGS3

Is this one of those sounds that got copied between artists/producers and isn't part of the original Fairlight library?
Or did Fairlight decided not to include this sound in the IIx library even if it was part of the Series I/II library?

I think it is a PPG Waveterm sample.

I can look and get back to you.

Thanks WT.

But I doubt that it is. The earliest album I hear this on is Jarre's Magnetic FIelds, 1981, which as far as I know predates the Waveterm?

Funny :p

Do you know all names (of Fairlight bank) of the samples use in magnetic
fields ?

Or on other JMJ albums ?

I know which are they, I just had very brief contact with CMI II, so I
know which are thee, but what the names are (I simply don't remember).

But there's immortal Saxy at the end of part I, there's that strange vox
that begins secont part of First Magnetic Fields, there's that strings
that you can make out of Pitztwng and LoStrng. I assume the entire idea
for part 3 is CMI (the looped chime with 5th).

Apart from Saxy and (possibly) the string sound in question, Jarre obviously made his own samples. He did not use many library sounds on that record, because there wasn't really a library yet. What else would one do with one of the very first Fairlights? :)

So... does anyone know about this string sound?

Actually I'm probably wrong. Was the CMI series 1 released with a library? Seems unlikely. If anyone has a link to a list I'd appreciate it. There was a pdf that Peter Weilk made of the library after he organised it. Does anyone know where it is?

Thanks. :)
