Hi Billy,

Sounds good, so your next bet would be the cables.
I do not know why there is one fuse missing, but is seemingly is standard,
it is also missing in my unit. If I recal correctly it is for the monitor.

I do not know the meaning of the verb 'obviate', I presume you are asking
whether the CMI needs a functioning Q133 card ? yes, but the card does not
necessarily need the battery. I ran the CMI software fine the other day
without the battery.

My card issue seems solved, I have at least one flaky soundboard. I
removed it and the unit works again.

The issue of fan noise was discussed a long time ago and do find the fans
very noisy. While cleaning the unit I found even more fans than the ones
for the cardcage. I saw 9 so far. I may attempt to reduce that noise and
report here the level of success. Currently, it is less desireable to use
the unit in my mixroom. Did a similar thing with the Rorke Scsi enclosure
I have, that worked very well.

Regards,
Harald

Adding a new page in the OS in order to upgrade the CMI IIx with HD facilities.........

2008-09-02 by Peter K.

Is it possible to add a new page in the OS?
Can anyone help with this or give advice?
My goal is to add new hardware to the CMI (IIx).....
Thinking of 2 GB Flashcard, that functions as a HD storage and another one for the OS drive (Also to be seen as a HD).
It should be able to copy data from and to the floppydrives and it should be able to run the CMI without the use of the floppydrives.
The flashcards could also be read and written on any standard PC, thus creating a modern backup system and a way to share sounds......
If anyone has better ideas, please let me know.
Cheers,
Peter Kersten.

I've had thoughts about this for a decade or so, and here's my favorite
idea:

- Build a "black box" which emulates the 8" floppy drive, following the
timing and status signals and data transfer rates.

- The black box is inserted between the Fairlight controller card and
the internal floppy drives, via flat ribbon cables.

- The black box buffers the data from/to the floppies.

- The black box also has a USB or FireWire socket, to be connected to PC
or Mac, etc.

- Software on the PC/Mac swaps disk images in/out of the black box.

The black box would direct CMI access to either floppy drive and/or to
the disk image buffer. The disk image buffer could be saved on PC/Mac,
and even split apart to get the individual files, or disk images could
be built. It's even possible that the disk image buffer could reside on
the PC/Mac and be "live", with drag-drop of files into and out of the
image (and ensure that the image does not exceed standard CMI floppy
disk sizes). The black box would take care of the "disk drive open"
signal, to simulate swapping floppies (the CMI would take this as a
signal to re-load the floppy).

This would work on every CMI, from Series I to MFX. It would be portable
from CMI to CMI, and would require no software or hardware mods to the CMI.

Re: Q133 card and lithium battery

2008-09-03 by billyrockplay

Hello gents, Harald
My excellent tech friend at NYU has told me the battery referenced in my previous posts,
though the correct voltage, is not the right battery for the q133 card. I am waiting for
delivery and will post the results when I test card in my machine. I sure hope things get
cleared up as I am getting CMI withdrawal symptoms.
Radio Shack has it wrong. We ordered the right one from a different vendor.
Peter Wielk has responded to my inquiries regarding the card and informed me has
working spares, which is very reassuring.

In the meantime - practicing guitar and listening to Ravel, Faure and Debussy.
All the best to the Fairlight crew.

Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Re: Q133 card and lithium battery

2008-09-03 by Laurent LEMAIRE

Hello Billyrock,

The only purpose and role this battery will do in your CMI is to keep
the
clock running while it is switch off, so you don't have to set the
time each
time you power it on. It has NO other influence in the CMI.

If you don't mind having a bad time displayed, which can't be right
anyway
due to the millenium bug in the OS9, then you can perfectly use your CMI
without any battery at all.

Don't expect the battery to fix anything else.

Many people prefer to remove the battery because it can generate severe
damages when getting old and leaking... So no battery could be a good
choice...

So if your CMI is not working without the battery, I'm afraid you have
to find
the origin of the failure.

Did the previous baterry did leak ?

Hope it helps.

     Laurent.

Hi Laurent -thank you for your input. I have heard your view before regarding the battery.
I did have a previous problem with my machine (5 years ago the machine took increasingly
long intervals to boot up - after replacing the battery on q133 card all was well). I have
not had any leakage from old batteries. It may be that replacing the battery has no benefit.
I'm pretty sure I have eliminated the QWERTY and cabling as the source of the problem.
I will report as soon as I get to see if new battery fixes my problem.
I am very open to suggestions so please forward any ideas you guys may have.
Thank you all for your support and suggestions. I am very grateful for our Fairlight
community.
Peace
Billyrock

Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Adding a new page in the OS in order to upgrade the CMI IIx with HD facilities.........

2008-09-05 by Peter K.

The more I think about it, the more I like this idea......... Thanks for your input Greg.
Yet, I still would love to have a HD-type storage for the IIx. Is has been done already. What happened with these machines?
What happened with the adapted OS?
Is there anyone that is willing to help out with this?
If anyone else wants this upgrade, please drop an email to the list and let your voice be heard.
Just saw that it's getting harder to get floppies... (Alexander is out...), so that makes the upgrade pretty important.
The IIx is a fabulous instrument, well worth keeping alive. (I sure hope I'm not the only one left that thinks this way....)

I think that the "black box" idea would work for hard drive emulation as
well. So every CMI from Series I on up could have unlimited storage. No
one is left behind.

How about building a prototype?

Great idea, but I'm not an electronics engineer... but a capable person
could design it with the specs and timing info of the various CMI
floppies, and of course a USB interface. It would probably fit inside
most CMIs, without mods.

I think the "black box" is the most feasible approach to CMI
connectivity. And, since it would work for all CMIs, it makes financial
sense for all of us to invest and hire an engineer or two.

Perhaps Eric ( http://www.rothfus.com/SVD/index.php ) could help out. He is a member of this list. I just send him an email and asked him. Also a friend of mine overhere in Europe, could perhaps help out, but sadly he's very busy with other things at the moment.
If you know people that could do the job, please contact them.
Other users that are interested in this upgrade: Please let your voice be heard and drop a mail to this group.
Anyone capable of helping out: Please let us know you are there........
Cheers,
Peter Kersten.

I would be willing to chip in for the development!
