Total, complete, utter newbie question

Total, complete, utter newbie question

2011-01-02 by computergirl_21

Hello all,

I just bought a used A-100 with the following modules :
3 x A110 VCO
1 x A112 Sampler/Wavetable Oscillator (superb)
1 x A114 Dual Ring Modulator
1 x A118 Noise / Ramdom generator
1 x A121 VCF2 Multimode Filter
1 x A120 VCF
1 x A131 VCA
1 x A134 VC Auto panner
1 x A138 Linear Mixer
3 x A140 Envelope Generator (ADSR)
1 x A147 VC LFO
1 x A145 LFO
1 x A148 Dual Sample and Hold
1 x A162 Dual Trigger / Delay

Eventually, I'd like to use it with Silent Way and Numerology, but right now, I would just like to get started. I have a Kenton Pro Solo MkII and thought I could use it with a MIDI keyboard. So far, I cannot hear any sound… :-s
that is why I thought I would ask you all how I should proceed. I feel silly, but I am doing all by myself and sometimes, I just get stuck. Thanks for reading and a happy 2011 to you!

Cheers
Sophie

Thank you for the fast reply, York!

this is how I patched it:
CV -> A-110 CV1 -> A131 Audio In
Gate -> A-140 Gate ->A131 CV1

I can see the envelope generator module LED lighting up when I press on a MIDI key, but still no sound.

For the output, I tried to use a patch lead and a 1/4" adaptor to plug it in the soundcard. Nothing. So I then use an audio cable and used another adaptor to be able to plug it in the output of the VCA. Nothing.

What am I missing?!?!

thank you anyway!

Best
Sophie

Hello George,

thank you for your message!
I used another VCO and it worked.
I am wondering if there is a possibility of false contact? If I was to check the modules on that regard, what/where should I look for?

Many, many thanks!

Sophie

Hi Sophie,

Happy New Year to you as well. Can you tell us how you set up the Kenton? A
basic patch would look something like this:

CV -> A-110 -> A-131 (Audio In)

Gate -> A-140 -> A-131 (CV In) -> Out

This should at least give you some sound and you can take it from there. Be
aware that the envelopes in their 'fast' setting are really fast so you may not
hear anything due to the envelope already being closed again.

York

Hello Sophie,

Please give a description of the patch you have set up and I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction.

A good starting point would be to patch the CV output on the Kenton into one of the VCOs pitch inputs. Patch the VCO output to the VCA input. Patch the VCA output out to your monitoring system. Patch the GATE output from the Kenton to the TRIGGER/GATE input of an ADSR. Patch the ADSR output to the CV input of the VCA. You will have to adjust the VCA gain and ADSR to get everything to work properly.

Okay, basic set up looks good. Try the following settings: On the A-140 put the
switch in the 'M' position, Attack 0, Decay 5, Sustain 3, Release 3. On the
A-131 Gain 3, In 10, Out 10.

Also make sure that the 'Range' knob of the A-110 sits somewhere in the middle
region. Perhaps also use another A-110. You can also insert your output cable
directly into one of the waveform outputs of the A-110 to test whether you get
any audio at all.

As for your conncetion to the soundcard I can't really help you there. I assume
you have tested it with other audio devices so you are sure it works. Try
inserting a headphone into the VCA to check whether you can get some sound but
watch those levels, the A-100 output is very hot.

And don't despair, having a modular and wondering why there's no sound go hand
in hand.

Hi Sophie, my A-110s cv inputs were the first to develop jack socket problems, probably because they get used in nearly every patch. Mine only work when I pull the cable a little bit (not all the way in). I've heard you can tighten the jacks with pliers if this is the case.

welcome aboard.

you can easily check if the 'faulty' vco module works by just plugging its output to your monitoring system (watch the levels!).

even with the full patching, the 'faulty' vco should still make sound but you would not get any response to the pro-solo's cv signal (the pitch would be constant).

is that the case? if the a110 does not make any sound from its outputs, then there is indeed a problem with the module and not with its cv input jack.

best regards,
Bakis.

Hi Jiltm hi Sophie

See http://www.doepfer.de/faq/a100_faq.htm#contact problems

Also there is a jumper on the pcb close to the ribbon cable connector,
where you can decide whether the bus CV is picked by the VCO.
